I like different hamburger joints that offer a different experience than McDonalds and Burger Kings. This was our fourth trip to State Burger and although everything was very good, our only complaint was the hamburger buns were day olds and stale. That took away from the experience and we will likely change our minds to go back there any time soon. Curly fries and sweet potato fries were hot and fresh and plenty of them. The burgers were made exactly the way we wanted them with exception to the stale buns.

My sister and her wife have lived in Kalamazoo for a few years now, driven by this restaurant quite a few times, and never went in. My sister's wife is a vegetarian, and any place with "Burger" in the name isn't very high on the "possible eating establishment" lists.

We went up to visit them this past weekend, and I was looking for a place to go eat on a Saturday night. Most places that cater to vegetarians or vegans, apparently, are only open for breakfast and lunch, or charge an arm and a leg, and I was at the end of my rope trying to find somewhere that we could all get a good meal.

Just out of curiosity, I opened up the webpage for State Burger... And, while I wouldn't say it changed my life, it sure changed the remainder of the night! You see, they carry Ope's vegan veggie burgers - both the original and the spicy black bean variety. They're organic, and locally made, and this made my sister-in-law extremely excited.

The restaurant isn't huge - just a small shop on the end of a strip mall. There are some tables & booths to sit down, or you can order for carry out. The staff is very friendly and patient, though, and the food... Well...

The prices aren't bad - expect to pay a little more than you would for one of the more expensive sandwiches at a typical fast food joint. But the food quality is so much better than any fast food place I've ever been to. They make everything possible from scratch - even their own barbeque sauce. Their burgers are juicy, their chicken is flavorful and tender, even their hot dogs are good. And the fries and onion rings are great without being too greasy. I, personally, had a chicken sandwich with their teriyaki marinade, and it was, hands-down, the best chicken sandwich I have ever had!

I would definitely recommend hunting down this place if you're in the area, and we will positively be visiting again the next time we're there.
