Description: City Park Grill, one of Petoskey’s oldest buildings, was originally constructed in 1875. McCarty Hall, as it was then known was a malesonly billiard parlor that offered cigars and “intoxicating beverages.” Today, City Park Grill maintains a loyal clientele with house-made cuisine, focusing on locally procured produce, meats and lake fish, an awardwinning wine collection and house-made biscuits straight from the oven

“Loud and noisy”

Glad to have called ahead to ask for a reservation. They do not take them but give priority to you when you arrive even though there were people standing there obviously for a long time.

Walked in and had an average table, but hoped for great service. Our waiter seemed a little distracted by all the people and others around us. I mentioned that it was very loud and it seemed hard for him to focus.

Ordered cocktails but had to wait because they were cleaning the glasses. Wow, what a novel approach to service. Saw several other tables served their drink before we finally got ours. Perhaps he forgot to place the order and the cleanliness was just an excuse.

Meal was average and we were there celebrating my wifes birthday so they brought her a "free" dessert. An apple turnover with ice cream. Much like the rest of the meal there was true disappointment as the turnover was cold and when we mentioned it the waiter said "they should know better to serve it warm". He did not offer to replace it with a properly prepared turnover however.

All in all the service was not very good. Some items cold when they should have been warm and vice versa.

This will probably be our last visit to this place, as our experience was not any better this time than last. Seems to be run by a group of teenagers.

“Pretty and interesting”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

There were 5 of us. We each ordered a different entree. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The prices were a bit high for some entrees we thought. It was an additional $5 for a side salad. We thought it should be included if the salmon was $24. The barbecue chicken was really chicken with barbecue sauce. (Good, but not truly barbecue chicken. ) Again, it was good. The pork chop with apple, bacon and cheese was the table's favorite. We loved the atmosphere, liked the food. The hostess was great. Our waitress was okay. Bring a sweater, the air was on high!!

Full of charm & history dating back to 1880's. Ate a burger at the bar; it was average but atmosphere was cool.

“Delicious! Great service, too!”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We'd been to City Park Grill before, and were excited to return when we visited Petoskey. We weren't disappointed! We sat outside on the very small patio, and we were never forgotten by our server. The biscuits (hot and fresh from the oven) are the best - we got seconds! We were there for lunch, and I enjoyed the Grilled Chicken Caprese sandwich - it was messy but delicious! My husband enjoyed the burger, too. There was a great crowd in the restaurant when we were there, so clearly others are on to this great spot, too. I'd highly recommend the City Park Grill!

“Historic City Park Grill”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

This is a must -see for visitors who are interested in the Hemingway connection to northern Michigan. The bar and interior finishes (metal ceiling, nice floors, all that paneling and I don't know what you call the architectural details) from a century ago makes you want to stop in and just look around. OK, I'm a history and literature geek, but I am not an elitist.

I stopped in around 4:30 PM on Thursday, August 1, 2013. There is a metered City parking lot across the street called "Elk's". This is near the top of the hill on Lake Street, just on the edge of the downtown area. A quarter rang up 60 minutes on top of the 40 minutes that remained from the last customer. All downtown areas in this part of Michigan have metered parking Except for Mackinaw City, we have found. Went in and sat at the bar and sampled a local draft beer - actually I had two - and an order of 6 wings "glazed", not too hots, which were on special. Very good, sweet and spicy, not standard seasoning to the sauce.

The waitresses are beautiful. Mostly they were standing around for guys like me to look at them. The bartenders take time to discuss beer and Ernest Hemingway with customers, something I don't know if it would have been possible if this had been a busy time of day. But the service is excellent.

There is a plaque on the exterior of the building commemorating The City Park Grill as a designated stop on the "Hemingway's Michigan Tour". During the season this is an extremely busy part of town and photo ops are hard to come by, but there are a few which I will attempt to attach to this memo. This is a place you just have to go see, and we're glad we knew about it.
