“Feel the wind and the waves”

Whitefish Point Bird Observatory

Not only a great place to view birds, but you get the whole experience of the powerful Lake Superior. Like Gordon Lightfoot wrote....The wind and the wires made a tattle-tale sound.

This is a very nice attraction that bird lovers and not will enjoy. A wealth of information on the birds native to this part of the U. P. and how to view them. Volunteers very friendly and helpful.

This was not our first visit to WPBO. We were greeted by the employee in the building, although she continued to arrange boxes of merchandise along side the counter. She was not as friendly & talkative as previous ladies have been. We walked out to the hawk observation tower and said hello to the man who was watching the sky. We got the distinct impression that we were bothering him. He was not at all interested in answering any questions. I might have understood if it was a busy birding morning, but counts were way down & it was a cold and windy day. We climbed the steps down back to the parking lot and left the guy alone with his camera's, scopes and other equipment. We walked out to the beach thru the tree's and saw the netting for the owl counts. We will return in the future & hopefully the staff will be a bit more receptive to visitors.

At one of the northern most spots along Michigan's Lake Superior shore line. It is in the path of bird migration so has a spring and fall count. There are multiple shipwrecks off the shore - and a WONDERFUL museum. A tribute to the Edmond Fitzgerald is very good.

We've been here multiple times in the summer and we also were here 2 winters ago. Walking the beach in both the Whitefish Bay side and the Lake Superior side is cool and there are a ton of colorful rocks on the beach. There are views of freighters and also the windmills on the Candian hillsides about 20 miles or so on the other side. There are a lot of birds since the birds stop here on their way north and south as they migrate. Be advised you have to have patience and you need to be dressed appropriately. There is a small museum/gift shop run by the Audobon Society and they have a fundraiser raffle for a beautiful quilt each year.

Our winter trip was stunning because the waves crashing onto the shore freeze up into real cool ice piles. We had our snow shoes and cross country ski poles and explored but we were careful not to get too close to the edge.
