“Audubon awesomeness.”
Reviewed March 8, 2012

This is right next to the Whitefish Point Lighthouse and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Since this point of land in Michigan is the nearest to Canada there are a lot of birds flying over Lake Superior to Whitefish Point. You walk through the woods to get to the fantastic beach. Might be cool, might be hot.

“Hot spot for birding”
Reviewed December 27, 2011

You can see huge numbers of migrating birds here in the spring and fall. They have programs for visitors to see owls that are caught in the banding nets during the night. Small giftshop/display building (needs to be bigger), observation deck on top of nearby dunes with view of lake and surrounding forest. A short walk to the point and you may see just about anything bird-wise. Also a good spot for rock collecting and watching big lake freighters chug by. Restrooms are available across the parking lot at the Shipwreck Museum. 11 miles north of Paradise (all paved) and about 20 from Tahquamenon Falls. Lots of gravel side roads in the nearby woods to explore. Normally colder and windier on the point than inland.

“Great mix of environments, wanted to stay all day!”
Reviewed September 18, 2011

The observatory is adjacent to the Whitefish Point lighthouse complex and there is a wide variety of people there. Wildlife is found along the beach or in the dunes and forest area. The observatory also has a small gift shop. The staff can help guide to sighting areas. Workshops are available at specific times. There is a lot more to explore than meets the eye. The longer you stay the more you uncover. This is part of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge system. Attraction things listed below are found at the lighthouse complex, across the parking lot from the observatory.

“Wow....just great!”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

We spent the night in the Crew Quarters there at Whitefish Point however we got there after they had closed. They banded 13 baby owls the night we stayed and didn't even know it was going on. To think if we could have gotten there earlier to find out that this was going on we could have watched. :( What a disappointment...our fault not theirs.

The beach is full of beautiful rocks right on Lake Superior and brought home 6 lbs of them. Good thing we brought 3 suit cases. Just beautiful, different rocks. It's so peaceful and there is a wooden walk, across the way behind the public bathrooms that we found at the last minute as we were leaving. We followed it up and saw some raptures but they were far off. We only wished we had found it sooner and would have sat there and waited for them to come closer. Just seemed it was not ment to be. lol

Their little gift shop had some really neat items for those bird lovers and also stuffed birds that was so intersting and educational. Also they had a huge list of them charting what they had seen, how many and when. Again it was very interesting and you should stop by. They lady there was VERY knowledgeable and answered all kinds of quesitons I had but we read on the way up that it was an off month for birds....dang it!!! Any way we would highly recommend it to all those that love nature and still upset we didnt' stop by sooner to find out about the banding of the owls.

Best thing about it all....it's free and you can even take a rock from the beach home with you. :) Make sure to take a bag of some sort to put them in. :)
