I recently took a good friend of mine my place of solitude, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The beauty of the U.P. is unsurpassed. If you ever have a chance to visit, please make reservations at one of the wonderful state parks that are abundant is this area. With Lake Superior to the North, there are many beautiful lakes in this area. Some used to be used as retention ponds for the massive amounts of lumber that have been cut in this area.

There are 2 sets of falls...we went to both. The upper falls are more impressive and there is a nice walking trail. There is an entrance fee for the park. The lower falls also has a small place to eat a light lunch or get an ice cream.

I hiked there yesterday from lower to upper falls w my two 13 and 15 year olds. Took us 2 hours. Very well marked. Interesting trail and moderately difficult. Take water and insect repellent. Wasn't very impressed by the falls since we have seen Niagra but the hikes good.

My 12-year old daughter and I had a wonderful two nights at the beautiful and quiet Rivermouth Campground about 20 minutes from the Lower Falls. We stayed right on the river, at a beautiful rustic site covered with wild blueberries. Though our section was outhouse only, showers are only a walk away. After visiting the lower falls, which are lovely, we headed out on a well-maintained hiking trail to the upper falls. The 4.8 mile trail roughly follows the Tahquamenon river, with lots of elevation change, but nothing too difficult or too muddy. You may encounter a long-distance hiker, since this stretch of trails is part of the North Country Trail system. We had planned to pay for the shuttle on the return ($14 for first person, $1 for a second kid), but after having lunch at the Brew Pub at Upper Falls, we opted to hike back! The hike took us 2h15min enroute with snack stops, and 1h45 on the return. We had some sore feet, but it was worth it!

If you camp at Rivermouth and want a short drive and a one-way afternoon hike, park at Lower Falls and explore, take the shuttle to Upper Falls, explore, have a picnic, a hotdog at the outdoor snack bar, or a beer at the (pricey but nice) pub, and hike back. Be aware that the shuttles don't run until 1:00 or 1:15, which was too late for us :)

If you e-mail the shuttle operator for a coupon, tickets are much cheaper.. tahquatrekker@gmail.com His site is: http://trailspotters.net/about/tahquamenon
The campgrounds offer a lot to do, though most happen at the Lower Falls campground, and we didn't drive to do them. www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/2010_Tahq_Visitor_web_319741_7.pdf

Love visiting the Tahquamenon Falls. Bring a camera and walking shoes. Beautiful scenery! Both the upper and lower falls is so awesome, don't just see one or you will miss a lot.
