“Food was terrible and super overpriced!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

My fiancé and I went there because we got a $25 off coupon in the mail. We really like hibachi and it was a new place we have never tried so we went. First of all, the place did not have the correct opening time on their website. Second, everything was VERY expensive. Even with the $25 off we still ended up paying almost $50 for it. Third, the atmosphere was ok. It was definitely modern and new looking but there was so much going on all at the same time. Almost an eyesore. Fourth, the fried rice was TERRIBLE!! My fiancé is a huge fan of any kind of rice and he wouldn't even touch the stuff after having a few bites. The seasoning was just all wrong and it didn't taste good at all. Fifth, we were literally the only people there but the service still wasn't great. It was just average service. But for what we paid it should have been much better. Sixth, sushi is very overpriced for what it is. I mean come on, a roll with imitation crab and avocado and it's $15?? That's a little ridiculous. Seventh, the hibachi grill guy was entertaining, but at the end he did a weird thing with these things that looked like pepper shakers and it reminded me of a trained monkey. And last but not least, I ordered the tuna. Big mistake!! They gave me a slab of tuna unseasoned, uncut, and I was thoroughly disappointed. Overall, I would never go back there. Even if they gave me a free meal. Food was bad, service was just ok, and everything was overpriced.

“A real treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

My wife and I decided to try this fairly new restaurant in Novi after receiving a very generous 25 dollar coupon in the mail. I must say we really enjoyed our dining experience. Our server Kate (the great) was very friendly, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic when answering questions about the menu Items we were interested in. We took her suggestions and really enjoyed everything we ate. We highly recommend Genji for any occasion.

“Gourmet Tepanyaki”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

We tried this restaurant because we received a coupon in the mail, and we love tepanyaki, but have had multiple bad experiences at Benihana. Wow....what a beautiful interior with clean lines, and beautiful furniture, and serviceware. The manager approached us immediately, and suggested some appetizers and pointed out some things on the menu, which we would have otherwise ignored. Our server, Renea, was timely, efficient, friendly, and helpful. One of the staff came to our table, because the lights (and unfortunately the keys) were left on in the car. It was raining very hard and the hostesses stated that they were happy we made it. They have a split of Mumm champagne for $10. We had the chicken and two filet dinners. There was a choice of two soups (not just miso)both were great. The salad was mixed greens with one of three dressings.....nice...we picked the Asian ginger dressing....delish. The chef, Ty, was terrific with his tricks, but flexed to us when he realized we wanted some but not many, without us saying anything....hurray! He was meticulous in his arrangement of the vegetable, rice, and meat. He explained about the giant oyster mushroom in the vegetable mix (broccolini included), and how best to enjoy its flavor. Some micronutrients (flowers, clovers) were placed beautifully on the plate. The meat looked tender even on the plate, AND WAS IT....it melted in your mouth. The fried rice had a delicious buttery, smoky flavor. I didn't have room for the piece of birthday cake, so Renea offered to box it to go. EVERYONE WAS TRYING SO HARD........DON'T YOU LOVE THAT!!! This was several steps up from any teppanyaki restaurant we've ever been to....!!!

“Worst family evening out!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2013

Very disappointed! Had 8:00pm reservations, seated at 8:45. Ignored at bar, took 25 min to get a cocktail. Service was terrible. 1/2 had sushi, other 1/2 teppanyaki. We were served our sushi before any food was served for the teppanyaki. 2 of our 5 had completed our meal before the other 3 were even served their soup/salad. Even our teppanyaki chef kept coming to get started, but no soup has been served so he couldn't start. Overall, an awful experience! My husband even tried to say something to a manager and he was blown off by the manager...they could have cared less. Will NEVER go back! Food was decent, but not worth the wait. We didn't get out of there until after 11:00pm.

“Delightful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

We were looking for a place to celebrate our wedding anniversary, something a bit out of our ordinary routine. Genji turned out to be a great choice. On arrival we were escorted by a friendly hostess to a booth in the main part of the restaurant. The place is beautiful with a wonderful Asian theme. The menu is extensive and creative crossing the boundaries of many cuisines well beyond the standard Japanese Steakhouse. The lobster bisque was the best I've had; we had a nice selection of Sushi for appetizer. The whitefish with Thai chili was flavorful with just the right amount of spice; it was plated nicely. The grilled sea scallops were done to perfection. Sides of brown and fried rice accented the meals nicely. We felt the quality of the food and portion sizes were well worth the price. Service was provided by an exceptionally friendly and attentive waitress - if you go ask to be seated in Kate's section: she was what made the whole experience DELIGHTFUL. We will definitely make return visits.
