I planned a spur of the moment trip to the Michigan City, IN area, with the intention of visiting the IN Dunes national lakeshore park. Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident on one of the dunes involving a child, so the park was temporarily closed. In addition to that, Washington Park beach was packed with people visiting for Michigan City's Summerfest. Needless to say, visiting the beaches in Michigan City didn't work out too well, so we drove up the coast. We stopped in every little beach community along the way and all the beaches were private, with no parking. We ended up at the New Buffalo, MI public beach and I'm glad we did. It is a nice smallish (but adequate) beach with clean sand. It was busy, but not so packed that you couldn't lay down a towel and umbrella. There were dunes for climbing and a rock jetty to explore, as well as paddleboats and kayaks that could be rented. The beach had a snack bar and restrooms (though they were VERY busy and small - only 4 stalls for the women). The sand was warm and soft and great to relax on. The water was cold (as always with Lake Michigan), but was tolerable to swim in after you adjust. It's a nice beach to go to for a visit and I will definitely visit it again.
