Manoir de la Riviere
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Manoir de la Riviere is magnificent. Our 3 night stay was a delight. It all starts with the proprietors who were the best of hosts and did all they could to make you feel at home. The food ( the serve dinner as well as breakfast) is as good as you will find in any 5 star restaurant anywhere. So good the first night that we elected to eat dinner there all three nights. The grounds (37 acres) are tranquil and provide a calming sense of peace. Walk the orchard (with one of the cats accompanying you) and see the flowers, pear, plum and apple trees or the strawberry or raspberry patches. Our room ( #2) was large, charming and comfortable. The pre-dinner lounge with self serve full bar service was beautiful and relaxing after a day of Normandy sightseeing. It is a 20 minute drive from Bayeux.I would go back just to stay there.

Room Tip: We loved #2 at the top of the stairs

I am always nervous about rave reviews, but Manoir de la Riviere deserves them all. We stayed with our children in July and it was a perfect location to visit both Mont St. Michel as well as all of the D-Day/Bayeaux sites. Iain is an awesome chef at dinner - plan to eat in every night - and the breakfasts were tremendous. Maureen brings a carefree charm to your visit - like you've been invited to visit friends in the country for the weekend. A perfect combination. The rooms were spacious and very clean. A wonderful, wonderful surprise all the way around. Can't wait to go back.

We really enjoyed our three nights at this superb hotel. It's a wonderful building, set in attractive grounds with an excellent restaurant and very spacious and comfortable rooms. The owners are very relaxed and informal making your stay feel like a visit to a friend's home. The hotel is very well placed for visiting Caen, Bayeux, the D day beaches and the war cemeteries. We had a really delicious meal in the restaurant. We would recommend this hotel as a centre for exploring the area ( you need a car ) or for a relaxing break in luxury surroundings.

I cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed our time at Manior de la Riviere. The location in the country just 20 minutes from Bayeaux makes seeing Normandy an easy drive. The manor itself is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Sitting in the garden with Moses (cute little dog) or one of the cats with the sun shining and the roses in full bloom is heavenly. Ian and Maureen are delightful. Ian is an amazing chef..dinners in the beautifully decorated dining room are excellent and impeccably served. He has a wonderful sense of humor and made sure we were well cared for. Maureen can give you great info on the house, gardening and life in France. They have years of experience in the hospitality field. Breakfasts are fresh breads and pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, cheese and sausage with great coffee or tea. Rooms are very large with huge bathrooms. There is a lounge area with WiFi. The beds were comfortable. Rooms have original beams and creaky stairs (loved them). There are amazing features to this house. Staying here was one of the highlights of our trip. Don't miss Maureen's homemade jams...yum.

Room Tip: Room 2 is a family suite with two sleeping rooms. Great for a family but also for 2 adult siblings...

If you enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of a country estate, with easy access to the Normandy beaches and Saint Michel, this is the place to visit.
The rooms are well kept and comfortable, and you have access to fireplaced lounges,
outdoor terraces, indoor swimming pool, and much more.
The owners run a cooking school, and for a very modest fee, will create a one-of-a-kind gourmet feast for you. Their offerings were far better than any of the surrounding restaurants, and after our first meal, we never wanted anything else.

We arrived this time needing a place to stay in Normandy, while we visited the sites. We intend to make Manor de la Rivière the destination next time. A graceful place to relax and enjoy fantastic culinary delights.

Quiet place with a beautiful location. Large rooms and bathroom. The owners are very friendly and hospitable – felt like visiting friends. We were even allowed to use the kitchen for a Sunday evening meal. Nice breakfast. We enjoyed our two nights stay. Recommended!

Five star hospitality but with an individual distinct style. Only a few rooms in a large manor house and with excellent attention to detail. Cup of fine darjeeling and homemade shortbread on arrival. Dinner was delicious - fine dining but honest style. Excellent produce with no foam in sight! Breakfast outstanding. Iain can certainly cook. Rooms all individual and beautifully done. Highly recommended. The swimming pool was bijou but got to say my children adored it.
