“Ultimate luxury”

We stayed 3 nights in June, would recommend to all. David and Lesley are consummate hosts, the food is sublime, the rooms beautifully furnished and totally comfortable. Excellent value for money.

This inn is located in the small village of Culey-le-Patry in what is known as Swiss Normandy. It is within an easy drive of most of the popular Normandy attractions. The countryside offers lovely views.

The chateau has been beautifully and lovingly restored by the innkeepers, Lesley and David Craven. It consists of 3 B&B rooms and a self catering apartment. We reserved the apartment, "Le Jardin" for 6 nights. It consists of very modern kitchen and bathroom and a large, very attractive bedroom. The only drawback, and I do mean the only drawback, is that the apartment is not handicap accessible since it is located about 30 steps above the ground floor.

The hosts are very friendly and welcoming. Since we were apartment renters we did not partake of their breakfasts. However, a 3 course supper or 5 course dinner is prepared several nights each week. The meal is prepared by the hosts (who also share the table with their guests) from items from their large garden and the local markets so everything is very fresh. The meal is beautifully prepared and presented and well worth the 36 Euro fee for the suppers we shared. These meals gave us the opportunity to engage in conversation with the hosts and their other guests (who were staying at the chateau for the 3rd time).

It is not possible to visit Normandy without a car. From the chateau we made day trips to Mont St. Michel, Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, Honfleur, and the Orne river valley. These are all very manageable from this location but if you are looking for city life, this spot is not for you.

For groups of up to 6, the Cravens also sublet a home called Le Moulin located a few kilometers down the road. This home is almost beyond belief. It is sited on the Orne and has a couple of acres of immaculately landscaped grounds. The house is fabulous. The location is idyllic. It would be hard to imagine a finer place to stay.

This is an excellent "high end" bed and breakfast establishment in a large, beautifully renovated chateau in a small village 20km or so south of Caen. The English owners are very attentive and excellent hosts. Breakfast is outstanding and, on evenings when they also serve dinner, the owners will join their guests at the table. The food is of the highest quality, beautifully pepared and presented. The bedrooms (three I think) are furnished to a very high standard. We stayed in the Papillon room which was very spacious and comfortable. The only drawback was that the en-suite bathroom was up a steep flight of stairs so an older person or someone with a walking disability may prefer a different room. The bathroom itself was a delight (almost as big as the ground floor of our own home!). This is not a cheap place to stay but worth every penny and highly recommended.
