“Peace and Tranquility in Normandy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2011

We stayed here for a few days in July and found it very comfortable and totally relaxing.
We had a downstairs room which lead out through a small kitchenette to the back garden which had tables chairs and sunloungers for our use, wouldn't have been as convenient if the room was upstairs. The restaurant is within easy walking distance and weather permitting a nice way to help digest your diner. The food was excellent.
The only thing we could suggest to the hotel was to supply some crockery and cutlery (and a bottle opener) in the kitchenette. On one sunny afternoon we bought some Pate, cheese, cooked meats, tomatoes, bread etc etc and some local wine and had lunch outside our room, we also bought some paper plates and plastic knives and forks but well worth the effort. Try the local Calvados you wont be disappointed:-)
The hotel is within easy striking distance of Bayeux (a must visit) and all the landing beaches and cemeteries Overall a really nice place to stay Hopefully we'll get back someday

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground floor

This hotel, the second house of the Ferme de la Ranconniere hotel, is picture postcard perfect. My wife, 15 year old daughter and I visited on holidays.
In the tiny Normandy village of Crepon, about 3 hours drive from Paris, the hotel is a renovated building that has about a dozen rooms around a central courtyard. Some rooms at ground level allow for ease of access. We had a second floor suite up two flights of spiral stone stairs. This access may prove difficult for some visitors.
Our room was immaculate. Pristinely clean with everything available as on their website. Amazing views over the rural Normandy coast, right in the middle of the D-Day landing beaches.
Staff were very friendly and very helpful on arrival, making sure we were settled and organised for dinner, which we took in the Ferme de la Ranconniere restaurant (a very nice meal but not amazing, we ate there only the once).
Crepon is the most beautiful quiet little village, population perhaps 100 or less. It is the ideal spot to stay as it is silent at night, although being so small it has virtually no amenities. Just the one restaurant at the hotel, one butcher shop, and one tiny Bar for the locals. It is however a perfect central location from which to explore Normandy by car (a car is mandatory).
About 10 minutes to Bayeux (tapestry, cathedral, Commonwealth War Cemetary and many museums), 10 minutes to Omaha Beach (USA War Cemetary) and within 60 minutes to hundreds of other WWII museums, cemetaries and notable sights.
We also day-tripped to Mont St Michel from Crepon, a lovely drive and amazing place.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Manoir de Mathan to anyone and we will definately return there someday.

Our one night stop at the Manoir de Mathan was a delight. The sister property to the larger and very popular Ferme de la Rançonnière a few hundred yards away in the same village, Le Manoir is quiet, clean and restful. Converted from a very old manor farmhouse (which also appears to include some apartments or time-shares), Le Manoir mainly seems to take the overflow from its sister property. We had dinner at Ferme de la Rançonnière (and a lovely drink in the courtyard before) and were treated to a superb meal. Our bedroom was on the top floor and was very spacious indeed, with dormer windows overlooking the large garden area and beyond to another farm and cattle pasture. The room was very tastefully decorated, with a high arched ceiling and lots of original and restored beam work. The beds were comfortable with lovely linens and there were armchairs, a sofa and plenty of light for reading and a large, light bathroom. The garden itself was a lovely place to wander, with a large expanse of well kept lawn, some large trees and shrubs, a pond and some chickens running free. The manor house is close to the D-Day beaches and Bayeux.

I have just returned from a 4 day trip to Normandy, staying at Le Manoir de Mathan and taking breakfast and evening meal at La Ferme de la Ranconniere.
The accommodation at La Ferme was fully booked when I tried to arrange a reservation on-line, so we were offered Le Manoir as an alternative. How glad I am that I accepted. The accommodation is in a wonderful building overlooking a beautiful courtyard. The whole place is French rustic. Old wooden beams and great furniture. It is as good as it looks on the website....maybe better.
We elected for demi-pension which is was a good decision on two levels. Firstly, there didn't appear to be many other eating opportunities close by. Secondly, the food is brilliant! You can pig out on the 'Gourmet' or be stuffed on the 'terroir' menu. You would need to be something of a connoisseur to take full value from the 'gourmet' menu.
Breakfast was taken at La Ferme or Le Manoir (if there were suuficient guests at the latter). Again, typical French with fruit, the world's best ever 'fromage frais', ham, cheese, bread, pastires. My God, the calories! Went straight to my hips! (That is an attempt at humour....I am a 50-plus year old male heterosexual....honest!!)
So, if you want a base to visit the D-Day beaches, Bayeux and Caen, then this place comes highly recommended.
