This is a great family owned and operated inn and restaurant in a great little medieval village surrounded by other great little villages also worth visiting. Grounds are beautiful, quiet and very well cared for. . . . As Americans living in France part-time, we have traveled France for 10 years and this is one of the best places we have stayed - and we've run the gamut from Relais &Chateaux to a small independent gite. Well furnished, clean, and up-to-date, Relais Sainte-Anne retains all the charm of a lovely French country inn. We planned on 2 nights but stayed three and would have stayed more if time had allowed. We used Relais Sainte-Anne as a base to explore much of the Lot and Dordogne region and the location was perfect. Our first night we enjoyed an excellent meal at the hotel restaurant at a very good price. As hotel owners ourselves, we would not hesitate to recommend Sainte-Anne to our customers or our friends.

Room Tip: Personally we think you should request one of the ground floor garden rooms in back of the restauran...

Having travelled around France on a number of occasions we always feel 'pulled back' to Relais Sainte-Anne. This year was our fourth visit but sadly we only stayed 3 nights and as soon as we moved on we were wishing we had stayed much longer. A little piece of heaven - that is the best way to describe this lovely place.

Room Tip: Just talk to the staff, ever helpful and will point you in the right direction. We have stayed in th...

We stayed one night here on a return journey through France from Spain. Beautiful old building in lovely grounds in a quiet road just on the edge of Martel. We had room No 10 a standard room - quite small but perfectly adequate and comfortable for a one night stay. Gardens and pool area were pleasant but in need of a good sweep and miffed to be charged 11euros for a pot of tea for 2 by the pool (served without a smile). Service overall was just ok - a few more smiles wouldn't go amiss. Didn't get to sample dinner in the restaurant as it was full but took the owners recommendation to eat at 'Au Hazard Balthazar' just up the road in the village was was superb.

The hotel is situated in the heart of the beautiful medieval town of Martel - a stunning place to just amble about. The hotel itself has very nice grounds with a swimming pool, lots of lawns and gardens and a lovely sense of peace and quiet pervades throughout - except for the very yappy dogs of the house who bark a lot but seem quite friendly.

The rooms are atmospheric and all seem quite different. Comfy beds, fine bathrooms and all very clean. Staff were quite friendly - slightly reserved perhaps but certainly helpful when asked.

Restaurant served absolutely gorgeous food for a very good price with some lovely amuses bouches.

Quibbles - the rooms were ever so slightly tired as were the main areas of the hotel. Not bad, not even worn out but it really wouldn't take much to update some of the furnishings and toileteries and just make you really feel pampered.

The bar area was unmanned and didn't quite seem to know what it was. Had something of the chintzy English cottage about it but there was nothing to really welcome you to sit there and while there was no sign to indicate an honour bar, we helped ourselves and told them the next day so we could be charged but we were never quite sure whether this was what is was designed for.

The restaurant, while v nice did not change its menu despite the hotel literature saying otherwise. Bearing in mind how little there is in town (and I'm thinking here about the very odd closing days of most of the restaurants which seem to be closed half the time) they really should have more choice and a more varied menu.

Overall we enjoyed ourselves. I am sure the owners are quite content to just stay as they are and there is nothing wrong with that. I just personally found it a bit frustrating as with just a few improvements this could really be a destination hotel.

Martel is a gem of a town in Dordogne. This hotel matches it for charm. The hotel was once a very old school, and still has a splendid chapel at it's centre. The grounds are substantial with a lovely pool, and there is plenty of parking despite the hotel being almost in the centre of the village and close to the historic market-place.The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and all different. The breakfasts are excellent, and the recent innovation of a prix fixe dinner prepared by the son of the owners a welcome addition. The service is friendly if at times just a little eccentric (none the worse for that as it matches the quirkiness of the hotel) and there are many repeat visitors. The only drawback with eating at the hotel is that the menu does not change very regularly and it is very easy to eat there regularly resulting in some repetition of dishes. There are some areas of the hotel in need of some care and attention. There are many towns and villages to visit, some excellent restaurants in the wider area. Be prepared for some rainy days, with it's magnificent river and natural beauty, the Dordogne is also very green with good cause.

Having arrived in temperatures of 40 degrees, it was a delight to find a superb and cool swimming pool awaiting us! This charming small hotel is a haven of peace and tranquility and an excellent base for visiting many charming villages.

The hotel itself and its grounds are beautiful, the room we had excellent. It was large and airy, with a bright modern bathroom with shower and jacuzzi, and being on the ground floor, french windows leading out onto a small terrace. Flowers are everywhere and there are sitting out places around the garden and in a pretty loggia, ideal for relaxing at the end of the day with a good book and a glass of wine. During our stay, the weather broke and was followed by a tremendous thunder storm, and a couple of days of wet weather. Even this did not detract from a pleasant stay, although we were never able to use the lovely looking outdoor eating area.
The hotel now has a restaurant serving dinner, and this, although a tiny and limited menu, we found excellent value at around 25 euros. Breakfast, as previously mentioned by other reviewers is wonderful, and bought individually to your table on trays, including a superb selection of breads, croissants. pastries etc - all very tempting!

The staff were charming and very helpful with suggestions of what to visit and see in the local areas. The hotel is a short walk from the centre of Martel which is a very pretty old village. The main Square has a wonderful market on Wednesdays and Saturdays (try the local honey and rose!) and there are plenty of cafe style restaurants if required, but we were more than happy to return each evening to the tranquility of our lovely little hotel!

Stayed here for just three days whilst visiting friends in Martel and loved the gentle ambience and style of this hotel.

The proprietor and staff were very friendly and efficient. The rooms were of a very high standard, both spacious and well furnished.

The hotel has a charming lounge/bar and the breakfast room has quaint furnishings and a lovely terrace. Great typically French breakfast of coffee, breads and cakes.

No restaurant for dinner but the hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the centre of Martel which has plenty of choice.
