“Nostalgic Railway Along Dordogne”
Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

This nostalgic railway runs between Martel and St. Denis. You can chose between a steamengine locomotive or a diesel. Tickets can be bought 30 minutes before departure. The train ride takes about 1 hour back and forth. Beautiful views of the Dordogne and The green pastures. If you take the steam train, be shure to bring glasses or anything to protect you eyes because small particals from the steamexhaust can get in your eyes, especially passing the tunnels. Enjoy the ride and bring a camera.

“OK”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Twice a week, the train is driven by a steam engine - but only back up the hill, and with the help of a diesel engine. Other times it's just the diesel engines. It goes through various old tunnels and emerges into the country with beautiful views. It gets very packed, something to do once. The keen band of restorers are to be admired for all their efforts.

“Magnificent train ride”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

This little steam train runs from 46600 MARTEL, France to St-Denis-les-Martel (about 6km) and return. Clinging to the side of the mountain the train affords magnificent views of the river Dordogne below. On the outward journey there is a stop for photo opportunities and on the return a unique refreshment stop. The train runs only from April to September and the steam engine is sometimes replaced by a diesel. A website gives all train times and dates.

“Great railway with fantastic views”
Reviewed October 2, 2011

I admit to being a railway enthusiast, and this is the seventh French preserved railway I have visited - but it is really good. The volunteers were excellent, and worked hard to make the trip enjoyable. They have done a wonderful job in creating a really good experience for the visitor. But the highlight is undoubtedly the view that you get on leaving the tunnel and finding you are on top of a tremendous cliff with a wonderful view.

And Martel is a very pleasant historical town too.

“I Liked It!”
Reviewed September 28, 2011

This attraction is interesting, but not exciting. A good choice trip for young families and for the retired set as it's pace is slow and easy. I enjoyed the slow trip down the tracks through the five tunnels and was extremely pleased that information was provided in English. The stop halfway down at a viewing platform that was 200+ feet above the valley was great. The locomotive was only used to pull the open carriages up from St. Denis, a shunter was used on the trip down. This train doesn't turn around and the trip is exactly the same both ways.
