5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2011

We had the cheap room in the top corner, but it was still clean and well stocked, if a bit small (but then French hotel rooms always are). Beautiful surroundings, lovely restaurant, and the staff are very helpful. Easy to find if you do your homework, but it is a little track off a fairly minor road out of Dijon. Expensive but worth it.

Having stayed here in December 2009, we had a fair idea of what to expect, though some recent reviews had me a little concerned. We arrived at 5pm and checked in (two rooms for 3 of us) and although we were in a different area of the hotel than last year, still no complaints whatsoever - we had 2 of the 3 rooms on the top floor with a view out over the pool and garden area at the rear of the property. Rooms were spacious, comfortable and well appointed. bathrooms a little small but fine. After joining other guests at an exhibition opening that was on in the reception area, we took a swim, then had dinner at the restaurant. The three of us had the tasting menu and were very happy with it - wines included. Good service, interesting seasonal menu and a lovely dining room. Would still recommend this hotel. Great price when booking in advance also.

The hotel is pleasantly located a short distance from the motor way and the start of the famous vinyards. The buildings and grounds are attractive with a delightful open air swimming pool. The public areas have been subject to a stylish makeover. However, as reported by former reviewers, the bed rooms are tired and in desperate need of refurbishment and in stark contrast to the Boutique impression being created elsewhere in the property.
We were particularly impressed by the staff and food in the restaurant, although as we found with most French restaurants, the mark up on the wines is verging on the extortionate.
Breakfast was Ok.

We stayed at Chateau de Saulon for 2 nights in July 2010 while travelling around Burgundy. It is located about 26Km from Dijon. It is a lovely, grand hotel approached down a short drive lined with trees in a very quiet location. It sits in beautiful, extensive grounds with a small lake at the back and a delightful stream to the side. Check-in was quick and easy. We were allocated room 105 which overlooked the grounds at the back of the hotel. There was a lift to our rooms. The room was small but comfortable. However it was a bit tired and could do with refurbishing. There was a bed settee in the room too but, in my opinion, if you had a third guests or child there with you, there just would not have been enough room for your belongings – we actually used the settee to store our suitcases on. It would be adequate for a short stay only. The room had a mini bar and TV. The bathroom was okay but really could do with being up-dated. There was a hairdryer but not a proper shower. Just a hand held shower attachment over the bath – which was a bit awkward. The weather was very hot during our stay and the room did not have air conditioning so we slept with the shutters closed and the windows open, which kept our rooms cool at night. The hotel had a nice sized swimming pool in the grounds behind the hotel plus a children’s pool. Towels were provided at reception for use by the pool – 1 towel per person per day. Breakfast is taken in a very modern and contemporary restaurant at the front of the main building. There was always a very good selection on offer buffet style at €14 per person. Dinner is taken in a restaurant block to the side of the main building. We had a lovely meal sitting outside on the restaurant’s terrace on our first evening. We had the ‘gastronomic’ menu, which was a wonderful experience and I would certainly recommend it. While dining we saw the occasional duck waddle past our table on the way to the nearby stream. One duck did seem to hurry past without stopping and with definite ‘purpose’ about him. I wonder if he was in a hurry to get past as he was worried about being added to the menu! There is also bar in the main building and a small terrace at the back where it was nice to take a drink in the evening before or after dinner. There is ample free car parking at the front of the hotel. This chateau is a very attractive building, well appointed with a lot to offer. I couldn’t believe it was just a 3-star. It could almost be 4-star. I think what lets it down is probably that the rooms could do with refurnishing and the bathrooms upgrading. I would certainly recommend it and would definitely stay here again if in the area.

This is a lovely hotel, with great interiors (looks like it has been recently given a trendy ovehall by a talented interior designer) and as a result is a real gem of luxury in dijon.
Its nowhere near the centre - so be aware that you need to drive to Dijon if you want to get out in the evenings (the hotel has a wonderful restaurant but it is expensive) but if you have a car- there is ample parking.
The hotel is in a really quiet location tucked away in a village and a world away from a chain hotel. The bedrooms are really lovely -and there is a great outdoor area with a large swimming pool- so wonderful for a short relaxing break.

We wanted to return to this chateau on the way back to theUK after having stayed there a few years ago. Close to the motorway it is easy to find, and a good stopoff point just south of Dijon.

The approach remains impressive with the long driveway leading to the imposing cheatea ahead.

What has changed? They ave created a glass structire on the front of the building to put in a lift and create a larger reception area. This just doesnt work, and is certainly not in keeping with the building.

A lot of money must have been spent on this, but not on the rooms, which were dissapointing and a bit run don.

The chateau has a lovely pool, and a gret place to relax in the afternoons in the sun.

There is a restaurant on site, but the food is average, and expenisive.

Would we return for a 3rd time? I don't think so. Just drive another 15/20 minutes and go to Hotel de Vougeout just outside the lovely village of Nuits Saint Georges. That will be our future stop over point in the future.

Taking the scenic route from Paris to Burgundy, we struggled to find our way after dark. Finally arriving around 10 p.m., the fabulous restaurant at the chateau accomodated our late arrival. We went in with the idea of a simple dinner and ended up choosing the 4 course prix fixe. It was amazing! For only 31 Euro, we had a fabulous dinner, far superior to a number of pricier meals. Since we were staying for two nights, we returned the next evening for the 8 course gastronomique menu. At 57 Euro, it was wonderful. Service was gracious. The room itself was simple and modern, a big cut above our room in Paris. The grounds of the property were lovely, but then, we don't look for perfectly manicured lawns. The trails were a pleasure, giving a feeling of remoteness right next to the road. We enjoyed our morning walks. The pool is big, perfect for a swim in spring or summer. We unfortunately arrived too late in fall to partake. Brrrr! We'd stay again in a minute!
