Hotel La Villa Romaine

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 4, 2012

We had difficulty finding La villa Romaine as the signing on the road was not significant. However this was our only criticism. The venue, location and friendly welcome were perfect. The rooms are charming and had everything we needed. The restaurant is a beautiful room and the food was wonderful. Service was freindly but also non intrusive.

The grounds are lovely, setting very peaceful and beautiful. We stayed in November but imagine in the summer with the pool it must be heaven on earth. Would definitely recommend.

The good news about this hotel is the beauty of the buildings (conceived to imitate a Roman forum) and of the location, near to the Dordogne river.

There is also bad news. The rooms (or at least the room we had) are more spartan than the outside appearance of the hotel would suggest. Not the luxury one would expect from the prices. The wifi system is the worst we have encountered in any French hotel. Each and every time you want to use it you need to go to reception to get a new code. The system not only fails to recognise you if you have left the hotel, it fails to recognise you if it has arbitrarily thrown you off - which it frequently does!

It is interesting to see in the tripadvisor reviews (especially the ones in French) how many criticise the hostility and rudeness of the proprietor. He was stunningly rude to me when I raised the question of the wifi, telling me that that was the way it was, that I should accept it, and that this sort of thing is more relaxed in the Dordogne than in Paris or London.

We will not be going again.

In this very touristic region, you have a lot of different kind of hotels and for different prices and hospitality.
When we arrived at "La villa romaine" at the end of a small road, I thought "I want to live here or at least to be my holiday home".

The hosts are very homey and Emilie explained that they tried to improve something every year (I like very much the decoration and the details)

Just stay one moment around the pool or have drink on the outside terrace and you would like to stay a little longer.

Room Tip: It depends on the season - just merely ask.

This Dordogne region hotel resembles a couple of Italian stone-walled villas - it does not look French at all, not that it matters but after a number of hotels it does get hard to work out where you are.
Our group of 28 completely booked this place out which was nice as we got to "take over" the dining room too. Mum and I scored one of the suites on the ground floor with separate bedrooms and kitchen (although no stovetop) and a separate toilet and bathroom. The decor is minimal but you won't be in your room much. There's a pool but we didn't get any time to jump in that.
It seems to be in the middle of nowhere so you will need a car if you plan to eat out.
If you sleep lightly you're likely to hear the frogs croaking for hours, which I did (I didn't have earplugs) and the bellowing of a cow or two on the nearby hill.

The Hotel Villa Romain is at the country side close to the village of Carsac-Aillac and approx.10 km of the beautiful, historical city of Sarlat and also other historical sides like Chateau`s etc close by. The Hotelrooms are sizable and confortable, Drinks can be served at the outside terrasse and dinner eather outsite or inside a nice restaurant.
Also the breakfast is very good and sufficient.
Important to mention is also that the Hotel has an very nice outdoor swimming pool.
The owner and the personal are very friendly and helpful.

We based our classic car rally there last year with some very discerning French friends and we were delighted with the facilities and our welcome from Emily and Davide, the owners. I am very surprised by the reviewer who found them unfriendly because they couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming to us. Perhaps there was a language barrier there? We will be heading back in May with our car friends for another stay and everyone is looking forward to it.

I stayed 6 nights in this hotel in a double room, while my sister and her three teenage boys booked a suite for the same peeriod of time.

Beautiful location and buildings but unfortunately entirely spoiled by the unpleasant welcome from the owners who live in the property, and with whom you always feel unwelcomed. You wonder if they are not doing the wrong job! No tact, no manners, unpleasant remarks and authoritative tone of voice to let you know about the numerous rules to follow when staying at their hotel. There is also rarely someone at the Reception desk and you keep waiting.

The waiters at the excellent restaurant are also unpleasant; only the lady in charge of the breakfast is really nice. It is also to be deplored that there is no possibility to have lunch, even a light one.

Other negative sides:
- Lounging chairs around the swimming pool are not enough in numbers and you have to fight for them, which is undignified; they also are not allowing to be fully flat and are uncomfortable.
- Towels for the swimming pool are not enough in number and only changed every three days (Part of the "rules" you are told about unpon arrival)
- No tissue provided in the bathrooms for the single rooms (at 130 euros per night!)
- Strict schedules for the (expensive and not great) breakfast where the owner starts shutting the buffet at 10.20 for 10.30

This reflects that everything is done to save money in this hotel. And this is surely not acceptable when considering the room rates.
