Travelling along the Route de la Corniche you can see houses built into the sides of the cliff (cave like) and little suspended fishing huts with nets dotted along the river bank. Homes and gardens are also very beautiful along the river.

The Route formed part of our greater cycling route and it was a very pleasant hour along the quiet roads, past holiday homes, along the river bank and riverside hamlets. I'm not sure what it offers from the river, but it's a very pleasant cycling byway.

We did this on a coach as an optional excursion whilst on a river cruise. To be honest I didn't think it was worth the money although we did benefit from a guide and of course the coach is driven by a professional. It may have been because it was raining or even late in the season but there wasn't really a wow factor. It may be better in sunny conditions but I'd have preferred to spend more time in Bourg which is a little town at the end of the trip.

Not the Riviera Corniche, but this ten mile stretch of D669(E1) along the water between Bourg and Blaye is proudly labeled le Corniche de la Gironde and is worth doing if you are in the area, like at the Bourg Citadel. Low key and pleasant, rather than spectacular, it is at the confluence of the Dordogne River and the Gironde Estuary. At river level, it separates modest but pretty homes from their gardens on the river side, has flowers in season, a few chateaux, typical fishing huts on stilts perched above the water and troglodite caves in the cliffs above. It has a panoramic river overlook at Ch. Eyquem (NOT Yquem), where the banks of grape vines contrast with natural gas tanks that decorate the islands where the Dordogne joins the Gironde. Although well known in the region, le Corniche has not been over run by tourists, and people are still willing to wave at you.
