“For such a small town this is a big Citadel”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

If you enjoy castles and Citadels this worth seeing. Historically this was important to France and designed and built by its foremost castle designer, best check to see when things are being staged for the best results, again this is the only thing of note in Blaye.

“always a treat...re visit to discover NEW bits”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

it's BIG, lots of nooks & crannies to explore. Built by Vauban at request of King Louis, to keep out the English.... NOt any more, as Citadelle is a free attraction welcoming all. Take a picnic and your camera.

“What an amazing fort”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

This is well worth a visit.

Good free parking.

Visit time 1 hour plus lunch! Plenty of restaurants to eat or areas to pique-nicque.

It is a large fort overlooking the Gironde estuary. Inside is a village. Church, restaurants, hotel, bars and quality local produce shops (leather, jewelery, gifts etc)

It has the wow factor without being ruined as a tourist attraction.

There is a ferry (vehicle and passenger) from the Medoc region to Blaye.
