Recommended by South African friend. Wise choice to stay outside Bordeaux.Traveling to and from Blaye to Bordeaux and surrounding areas very convenient. The owners Les and Clarissa were unbelievable hosts. Typical South African hospitality in France. The apartment for 6 we stayed in was very comfy and well equipped Single bathroom and separate toilet.the art work expressive. The information brochure the best i have seen. Les wine de banking is a must. One of the most enjoyable evenings i have had. Wine is his passion and his knowledge unreal. WE COULD ONLY RECOMMEND VILLA ST SIMON THX LES CLARISSA

We recently returned from a 12 night cruise on Celebrity. We had an overnight stop at Le Verdon, France. The location the ship docked was beyond remote. This is a commercial port and not within walking distance of anything. The ship offered bus rides for a fee but still there was not much available. We made inquiries to assist us in making plans but the cruise line was not forthcoming with information as they wanted everyone to take the ship sponsored tours which we never do. We were aware of this going into it so my wife began checking for a B&B in the Bordeaux Region. What a great find she made when she located Villa St. Simon in Blaye. They were agreeable in picking us up at the ship even though they are located 2 1/2 hours away. Clarissa picked up our party of 6 and we had a very enjoyable drive through the countryside which ended with an outstanding lunch with she and Les, the owner of the B&B. We went on a wine tour in the afternoon then a light dinner with other guests we met. The following day, after breakfast, they drove us back to the ship. We were driven by "Julian", one of their staff from England. He was beyond fantastic and the day was not long enough to enjoy him and all of his stories. Another stop at a second winery and then a local lunch. Julian was possibly the high point of the stay but we must say the trip to the B&B was something to be remembered. It was not fancy but was exactly what we were looking for. Highly recommended by our group!

This was an interesting place to stay, well-positioned in the pleasant village of Blaye. The décor was interesting and full of old knick-knacks, many of which are wine related. This is not a modern B&B, and the room we stayed in had no air-conditioning, but we opened the windows and were not too put out by the noise from outside. If you are used to quiet however, this may not be ideal for you. We had a comfortable bed and were content here. There are lots of tips available from Julian (we did not meet the owners) and these were generally helpful. We felt that some restaurant recommendations were a little biased, so certainly try them, but I suggest you don’t rely only on the hotel. Similarly with wine - we found it better to buy wine at the restaurant than to take it from the Villa - but of course that’s personal preference. The stairs would be difficult for some, but add to the character of the place. Overall a good choice for a day or two, but I’d look for something more modern for a longer stay.

Room Tip: Better water pressure for showers in lower rooms.

We stayed 4 nights at Villa St. Simon after a recommendation from an acquaintance who also stayed there. In fact, we hadn't even planned to visit the area after Paris, but we are so incredibly glad we did! We stayed in the self-catering flat across from the Villa at Chez Simon - #5 - and it was lovely. If you can't do stairs, however, request a lower floor. The entire stay was absolutely beyond our expectations, from the moment we were picked up in Bordeaux (thanks Les!) to the moment we were dropped off for our the next leg of our journey (Merci David!). It's so wonderful to meet people who have such a passion for wine and unparalleled hospitality. Les is a fabulous wine educator (his Debunking De Wine is a MUST!)... and we enjoyed a lovely St. Emilion tour while we were there also. Thanks also to the lovely Clarissa and the most entertaining Julian! Be sure to book your stay to coincide with one of the two market days each week (Wed & Sat) as it's not to be missed! That's our idea of French take-out! Incroyable! Our flat was perfectly appointed, and we absolutely can't wait to come back for a longer stay next time! It would be quite easy to spend 7-10 days in this charming little village, and do as many of the wine tours as you can! Look forward to coming back soon! If you love Bordeaux wines (or any wine for that matter!), this is a must. Definitely worth the trip from Canada! Angela & Randy

Room Tip: The room at Chez Simon was lovely! We had #5

The Villa is in a really traditional village, well situated but what really makes the stay special are the owners' hospitality. It was really a great three nights and for visits to the Medoc and St Emilion highly recommended. On the down side a very soft mattress. the owner Les also has enormous wine knowledge and offers great tours.

We stayed here for three nights on a sojourn around south west France and what a find it was! The hotel is devoted to wine - each room is named after a wine producer, the dining room is full of wine memorabilia etc. But the best part of all was the enthusiasm of our hosts Les and Clarissa, We attended one of Les' "wine debunking" sessions where we learned a lot of the basics of wine in a very friendly, humorous way. The Villa has a well stocked cellar and guest are encouraged to help themselves and leave a tag on a hook with the corresponding price for the wine you have drunk - this honour system is perfectly in keeping with the ambiance of the Villa. Nearby are some great places to eat and Blaye is a great base for exploring the Medoc and the Gironde. we will definitely be back!
