Owner description: The Hackley and Hume Historic Site features the restored homes of Muskegon's most well-known lumber barons with outstanding wood carving, stained glass windows, and period furnishings. A guided tour of the homes offers visitors a look at life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. During the summer months, there are often games on the lawn for our young visitors. The Site is open from May to October.

took family there, a lot to see. very interesting to see the old ways and living. Beautiful. Kids had fun. Bringing little kids is harder however, too many temptations to touch.

Excellent 1.5 hour tour of these two historic houses. Tour guide ( Marian) certainly knew her stuff and gave a real insight into the houses and ther former owners. She is still finding out things about these houses 15 years after she started work as a guide. A $5 fee is good value for money. Also try the art musuem just up the road.

One of the best historical homes I've seen.
The wood work is amazing. Look like russian palaces. Tour was great. Only $5 per person, kids free.
Many original details & furniture.

For $5 you get to visit 2 historic Victorian homes that were built around 1889 plus their "duplex" garage! The workers are very knowledgeable volunteers who tried to make us feel welcome. The homes are preserved right now as if it was 1913, the year 2 young ladies of the family got married. You get to see every detail of the downstairs and upstairs of each home! Very beautiful woodwork, period pieces, pictures and more! The tour lasted about an hour and was very interesting. The tour guide patiently answered any questions we might have, so your tour may last as long as there are questions!

We visited with my in-laws in July 2013, it was my first time taking the tour despite living in the area my entire life. Several interesting facts are offered about Muskegon, the Hackleys, the Humes and the restoration of the homes. The houses are very ornate and your tour guide will add on things if your group has extra time. There is also a Depression Era home around the corner you can view that is included in the price of these tickets. If you visit in the month of September 2013 tours are free! Also, this year the special exhibit in the barn upstairs from the gift shop is about the double wedding the daughters held, there are their dresses and other accessories on display.

The gift shop isn't all that great, my mother-in-law was looking for a book on the Hackley's for further information and we ended up finding one in a local antique store, not in the gift shop! The most information they offer there is a photo booklet.
