A wonderful surprise awaits everyone who walks in the door of Hotel El Convento. Lovely gardens, beautiful furnishings in a tranquil setting. The service was great--I reported that a hall light was out, and it was replaced immediately. I didn't want to leave this lovely hotel!

Room Tip: Get a room on the garden side if possible. Beautiful views and very quiet.

Two lovely nights at this wonderful hotel. Architecture is marvelous, location convenient to town center and sights. Attentive staff, very good breakfast buffet and dinner menu. Courtyard fountain is great to walk around at night and look up at the stars. Lots of artworks and colonial style furniture and bric a brac contribute to atmosphere. Only drawback….very very poor water pressure in the shower in the morning.

We stayed two nights in this charming hotel within easy walking of the main square and massive Cathedral. Leon is a place to go if architecture and churches are for you, it is lively but not as well preserved as Granada.

El Convento Hotel is what it says, a former convent with a central garden which is beautifully kept and has plenty of resident bird life.

The rooms are situated in a square shape outside the quadrangle, some look in towards the garden (as did ours, number 29) whereas others back on to street or the rear car park and consequently have a much poorer outlook.

Staff speak very little to no English so you do need some Spanish here and service is not quite up to the mark of other places. Nonetheless when we arrived the room safe was nowhere to be seen and they quickly installed one so good marks for this.

The room itself is large with a nice bath, simply but tastefully decorated but the corridors are full of nice antiques and there are some very large function rooms near the restaurant.

Breakfast was a relatively simple affair with a buffet (ingredients varied) and although it was not our original plan we ended up dining here both nights. We were looking at other places, one asked for $30 advance payment to reserve a table(!!) and we walked out of the other as they had almost none of the ingredients on their menu (not surprisingly there was no one in the La Perla). So we went back to El Convento and what a good decision it was. Although there was no fish the first night everything we ate was extremely tasty and well presented. Service a little on the slow side but the waiters were very friendly and were interested in engaging with us English.

There is also a small swimming pool at the back, we did not get the chance to use it but it can be blisteringly hot in Leon so probably a good place to cool off.

Leon is probably a place you only visit once but although not cheap El Convento is well worthy of consideration.
.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the inner courtyard and garden should be much quieter

We stayed two nights in the hotel and enjoyed them both. The hotel is centrally located in a gorgeous renovated convent with beautiful gardens and courtyards. It still contains amazing artwork and altars from its former life. Lovely rooms, decent breakfast, helpful staff. We highly recommend staying there!

Very quaint and charming atmosphere in an old convent style with a big courtyard and rooms around single story. Efficient and nice staff, even the security guys were helpful and professional with everything including tasks outside their duties. Small but clean and very stylish pool. Good location close to the main square and the main little street with bars, but (thankfully) on the other side of the square from where the main gringo backpacker hostels are. Suitable for solo travellers, romantic couples as well as families though it is a quiet place so multiple small kids might break the atmosphere and seem out of place. Pricey but worth it if you want to pay a little extra for a quality stay in Leon.

Nice colonial place to stay. Former convent, very well furnished with a fountain centered garden surrounded by the old cloister. The rooms are confortable a big. Too bad there is sometimes a smell of humidity. Very efficient and courtious staff. Excellent cuisine.

Pleasant rooms surround a fountain-centered, immaculately clipped courtyard with a small maze of low shrubbery. All areas have a feel of great age and feature intriguing art and memorabilia from the building’s religious origins. Although the rooms are large, the windows are small. The serene, almost austere, ambience of the cloister pervades these rooms and is increased by the iron fence that separates the loggia from the courtyard. You can enter the courtyard only from the main hotel entrance.

For ice and coffee you must go to the restaurant or wait for room service. The breakfast buffet is average if you get there early and down to crumbs and scrapings if you don’t. If you plan to do hand laundry, bring a sink stopper and hangers. The rooms have hangers that cannot be removed from the closet and our sink had no drain plug.

Room Tip: Front rooms have street noise; back rooms have delivery truck and maintenance views. Maybe try a r...
