Before coming to Nicaragua, I had zero knowledge of speaking Spanish. I never took classes in high school or college, but I have chosen to volunteer in Nicaragua for a few months. I have been taking classes with Angel and he has been a huge help in working on my Spanish. He knows I have no experience with the language and is really taking the time to teach me the basics and making sure I am comprehending. The lessons have been extremely helpful and I can see myself progressing rapidly. La Isla Foundation is an atmosphere where I feel comfortable taking my lessons and the staff has been very accommodating and has made me feel at home.

I took several one on one Spanish classes with Angel and he is an excellent teacher. Angel also knows almost everything about the history, geography and current events happening in Nicaragua and Central America so I was able to learn so much more than just Spanish during our classes. In addition, all of the people at La Isla are warm and friendly and there is something really special about knowing that the money they make from their Spanish classes also supports sugarcane workers and families that are suffering from the Chronic Kidney Disease epidemic that is ravaging many of the sugarcane villages around here.

I stayed here in a single room with shared bath for 8 days. I wanted to fit some Spanish lessons around my main priority, hiking some of the nearby volcanoes. Colin, my contact at La Isla, was very flexible and accommodating and was able arrange my lessons around the hiking trips I was able to book independently. My teacher was friendly and professional and I felt we worked at an appropriate level of instruction after he assessed my level through conversation and a written test. The La Isla headquarters are located just a half block off one of the main streets in easy waking distance to banks, supermercados, tour operators etc. I cooked all my meals in the shared kitchen. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. This is a working headquarters with living space attached, so it is not like a standard hostel, which I appreciated - the sleeping was excellent. Because of my volcano obsession I did not take advantage of the activities and tours which La Isla offers but when I next visit Leon I will look into them further. The prices were very reasonable and it is good to know that part of what you pay is used to support valuable community projects. This is a very good alternative to a standard hostel or language school setup.
