“Have a beer overlooking estruary”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

Went to roads end at boat ramp where there are a few little restaurants overlooking the estruary outlet.
Have a cold beer or meal, and watch the changing tide. U can swim nearby too. Less gringos than Las Penitas beach at south end of road.

“Local flavor”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

Down the road from Las Penitas you'll find Poneloya. This were the locals go the relax at the beach. Be sure to catch the last bus back to Leon before dark. Once the sun goes down the town is virtually deserted and a taxi back to town is NOT an option.

“Ghost town”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

We were looking for waves in northern nica. Read a bit about poneloya and las penitas but upon arrival it felt like an abandoned surf town. Not much going on, a few spots to stay but a mixed vibe. We stayed at De Rocas, it was right on the water but the service was average.

I would bypass Poneloya and head nroth to Chinandega or south to Puerto Sandino

“Much better beach than Las Penitas!!!”
Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

Worlds better when compared to it's neighbor Las Penitas, but still among my least favorite in Nicaragua! Almost nothing to do other than walk the beach, see the sunset and people watch. We had to walk to the Y-turn off between Las Penitas & Poneloya to find a taxi.

“beuatiful leon beach”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

It's a getaway from the churches and streets of Leon. The beach is popular among locals but hardly visited by foreigners. There is a place full of rocks to climb and a cross on top. A popular place for fiestas for the locals.
