“Ghost town”
Review of Playa Poneloya

We were looking for waves in northern nica. Read a bit about poneloya and las penitas but upon arrival it felt like an abandoned surf town. Not much going on, a few spots to stay but a mixed vibe. We stayed at De Rocas, it was right on the water but the service was average.

I would bypass Poneloya and head nroth to Chinandega or south to Puerto Sandino

Worlds better when compared to it's neighbor Las Penitas, but still among my least favorite in Nicaragua! Almost nothing to do other than walk the beach, see the sunset and people watch. We had to walk to the Y-turn off between Las Penitas & Poneloya to find a taxi.

It's a getaway from the churches and streets of Leon. The beach is popular among locals but hardly visited by foreigners. There is a place full of rocks to climb and a cross on top. A popular place for fiestas for the locals.

Rode my motorcycle out to the beach from Leon. Very charming little beach. There are a variety of nice hostals and bar/restaurants. What a great place to relax. Peace

I found this spot quite by accident, was checking out leon and decided to go to the beach. there are quite a few more places to stay than shown on lonely planet or trip advisor, and I just drove around till I found a good one, right on the beach, $6 a night for very nice dorm rooms. they had an office in leon to that did volcano boarding tours, a unique to Nicaragua adventure sport. look for Quetzal trekkers, a charity/not for profit organization.they book the rooms there too. food was good and best price. the beach is wonderful and quiet, as this is not as full of people as other surf spots on the pacific coast. the surf is good, but I am told it it gets much better than I saw it. there are board rental spots and quite a variety of types of lodging for any budget. A must see and stay spot on any trip through Nicaragua.
