“A Real Beauty”

A superb gallery - beautifully exhibited in two colonial buildings. Artists from all around south and central America, some famous others a surprise. Free on Sundays!

“World-class contemporary art in gorgeous buildings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2013

What an amazing discovery this was. Contemporary art from Central American artists beautifully displayed. There were many particularly beautiful paintings, much more original and interesting than much I have seen recently in Europe, with some installation work, sculpture, video art and photography, all interesting and all displayed cleverly in the side rooms and corridors of several colonial buildings that are beautifully renovated. Colonial style buildings worth visiting for their own sake, containing lovely courtyard gardens The galleries are worth a trip to Leon in their own right! They plan a biennial of Central American artists which is an exciting project and I hope to return to see the results of that.
The second building had been open only one week when we visited and I understand the previous reviewer's frustration at it's being closed for renovation but what they have done is wonderful. Highly reccomended.

“entire museum closed for a month”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

This is the only art gallery that I really wanted to visit in Nicaragua, and the whole museum was closed for an entire month for remodeling. I'm sure they had a reason for doing it this way and not in parts, but it was terribly disappointing. I have no idea when I'll return to Leon. :( Such a shame, its collection is very famous and I was really looking forward to learning more about modern and contemporary Latin art.

“a real gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

I was surprised and pleased to find a museum of such high quality in Leon. It compares with museums of its size anywhere in the world. The collection of 20th and 21st century Latin American art is a real revelation! Well worth a visit. You can hire a guide for a modest fee. They are students of tourism at the university.

BUT--on our last visit (July 2013), the museum was being renovated and only a very small part of the collection was on display. So, if you are already in town, it's still worth a visit; but if you are making a special trip to see the museum, check first.

“Nice, if you have never been to a Museum before”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

Its claim to fame is a couple of PRINTS of Picasso. But they are only that, in fact, the modern work of a truly talented artist, Armando Morales, are also prints. The originals from the 15th-18th century, are mediocre at best.
Thankfully it only costs $1 to enter, so if you need to kill some time, and don't have a museum where you are from, be sure to visit it.
To be fair, their modern wing was closed, but based on the collection I saw it only promises to disappoint.
