We stayed for 1 night and really enjoyed it. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. The facilities are charming and the rooms are cosy. Location is convenient and we enthusiastically recommend Casona.

beds were a bit too soft for me, for the rest the atmosphere is very colonial and superb

Room Tip: matrasses were too soft for me, but for some travellers this will not be a problem

My review is based on one of the $20 rooms.

Their website: http://www.casonacolonialguest.com/

Casona Colonial is a gorgeous guesthouse with lovely owners. If you're a budget traveller or backpacker you can certainly get cheaper accommodations in Léon, but if you want a unique experience with a homey, personal feel and a little peace and quiet, then this is probably a good choice.

Reasons I gave 4/5 are based on my particular room. It didn't get much sunlight; cleanliness was about 8.5/10; and the furniture was clunky (but of course it's old and charming).

Good food nearby: if you want some typical Nicaraguan fare, a good recommendation the Casona owners gave me is Comedor Lucia, located right next to Bigfoot Hostel. I didn't see any foreigners eating there but they should!

Note to solo female travellers: This is a great choice for you, but keep safety in mind if you're going out alone at night. I walked around in the Casona's vicinity at about 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night and felt slightly uncomfortable. The streets around that block suddenly became a little deserted after dark and there were a lot of loitering cat-calling boys and few women outside. Not that the boys don't loiter and cat-call during the daytime, but you can sense it's a little more aggressive at night. Nothing really menacing but just something to keep in mind.

Feels like being 'home'. Rooms are nice and clean. No hot water but that's not unusual. The owner is charming and makes you feel welcome. It is a quiet 'resort' feeling like guesthouse. Loved it.

Our double was $20 U.S. per night. Rosado, the owner makes you feel at home. The beds are comfortable - you will sleep well in this quiet place where you will enjoy the beautiful garden area.

I am a medical worker between missions and am spending a week at la Casona Colonial. Rosado, the owner, lives on the premises and could not be nicer. She speaks some English but always goes out of her way to figure out how she can help. (As I sit typing this, she brought some iced tea, no charge.) The place is small, but the rooms are nicely kept with good beds and some of the only screened windows I've seen in Nicaragua. Fans, no A/C. There is a covered, open-air sitting area with rocking chairs, a television, and lots of books. There is a great old dining table where Rosado will serve you a very good breakfast (for about $4). There is wifi in the sitting areas and the rooms. The place is spotless. Rosado and her small staff are constantly cleaning. Her staff will do laundry for 30 cordoba, about $1.50 US. No hot water, but that's usual for a place in this price range. The bathrooms are spotless. The Casona is about 4 blocks north from the main plaza, an easy 5-10 minute walk. Rosado does lock the front gate at 10pm, but she gives you a key. Its far enough out that its pretty quiet at night. My single is running $20 US /night. I highly recommend the Casona for a nice, clean, safe place in this price range.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The first thing you may notice about the guesthouse is that it is a historic colonial house located in Leon, Nicaragua. The guesthouse gives off a homey and inviting atmosphere that distinguishes it from other impersonal hotels and hostels you may be familiar with. The magic of this place is its well preserved Spanish cultural heritage which is ever present in its architecture and decor. The Casona Colonial Guesthouse is the perfect guesthouse for those who want to be at home even when they are far from home. This place is for those looking for the rich warmth of a home they know well, where they feel welcome and wanted. It is for those who want to immerse themselves into the history of Leon in a small way by spending a few nights under our roof and our care. Even the furniture housed here is antique, characterizing the old style that people who have lived in Leon for many years remember. The guesthouse is also for those who have a desire for and a little adventure. When you enter this colonial mansion, you will not be greeted by an impersonal and bland registration desk but rather you are very likely to receive the warm smile of the owner and her welcome. In place of the registration desk, your first impression will be of the two beautiful gardens located in the center of the guesthouse. The Casona Colonial Guesthouse is located a half block from the San Juan park and a short walk from excellent restaurants and the center of town, which is where the historic Cathedral of Leon sits. Wikipedia notes that the Cathedral is a significantly important and historic landmark in Nicaragua. The Cathedral was awarded World Heritage Site status with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). So join us!
