“Awesome unique experience with great views”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

Loved it! I have hiked 8 volcanoes in Nicaragua and this is one of the best. Not only for the starkness of the landscape, the unique feeling of sulfur twirling in your hair near the funnels, but the rush of volcano boarding back down! I would recommend going with Quetzal Trekkers because then you get to board down 2x - not sure it would be worth the guide money otherwise. Their guides are super chill and the proceeds go to a well needed cause.

“Volcano bording, such cool thing to do, really belongs on the second place of things to do list before you die (CNN).”
Reviewed January 21, 2012

Bigfoot hostel arranges trips to the Cerro Negro Volcano. The surfing off the volcano is so worth doing! A bit scary, but really awsome. You can go as fast as you want. From 15-90 km/h. We can recommend it to you! On the way to the volcane you have a great view of the country. Beautiful!

“Beautiful area”
Reviewed January 15, 2012

We all (husband & I and two middle school boys) loved the area and the hike up. The sandboarding was fun but so quick - the height of the experience was really being in the area and the easy hike. Incredibly windy at the top!

“A must visit Volcano”
Reviewed January 7, 2012

The climb up seems impossible, the descent even more so. But actually well worth doing. Get yourself a minbus there and have a great few hours. Not recommended if you suffer vertigo or any sort of mobility issues. The walk up starts gentle but then there is a 10 minute scramble and a walk round the rim. The volcano last erupted in 1992 if I remember rightly. So the vegetation hasn't grown back yet and so it's just hunks of black lava. Coming down, the route is via a near vertical (well it felt like it) mix of scree and sand. Safe, but your brain will be telling you it's not as it just looks so scary looking down the vertical drop. Good walking shoes/boots a must. As is insect repellant (we went in December) as there are some blood sucking nasties. But overall you will love the experience.
