“Volcano Boarding with Bigfoot Hostel was awesome!!”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

We got a group of about 10-12 people together to do thie Bigfoot Hostel tour to Cerro Negro and Volcano boarding. It was very affordable, about $19 per person i think which included transportation to Cerro Negro, all equipment, a guide and a beer and a mojito after the tour. I was freaked out at first because the Volcano is much higher than I expected, but enede up loving it!!! It was really fun and the mojito back at the Hostel was pretty awesome too!!! We are planning to go Volcano boarding again soon!!! Just go with a company that provides safety gear, I saw other people there in shorts and no goggles on, and you could get pretty seriously injured without proper protective gear!!! Bigfoot provided us with a heavy jumpsuit and goggles and of course the board. The hike to the top was also nice, but know it takes about 45 min to hike and is very hot and you have to carry your own board which is sort of heavy:) So be prepared!!! I also beleive you have to pay a small entrance fee to the park, which is different for tourists than residents, I think tourists have to pay about 100 Cordobas, or around $5, this is in addition to the Bigfoot fee of $19. I should add its a rough ride there!! But we also met a lot of cool people on the ride and hike up the volcano and the views from the top are really beautiful!!

The volcano is amazing. The views were great, even with the fog. The volcano boarding was amazing, tons of fun.

“Volcano Boarding”
Reviewed October 8, 2011

Nearby Hostel (Bigfoot Hostel)

When we went on the tour, it was guided by Anthony. The meeting/ sign-up spot was located at Bigfoot hostel. We started around 9am and all rode in a truck provided by the tour group for about an hour to Cerro Negro. Keep in mind, the ride was VERY bumpy. Since there were no seat belts, we were bouncing around, which made the experience even more fun. At the base of the volcano, there was an official check-in venue where a rest room was available, and there was also an small iguana preservation area to look at. The price is very reasonable, and they had T Shirts for sale too. (go on youtube to preview volcano boarding)

To get to the top of the volcano, you had to hike about 45 minutes with your board. (If you've walked up a mountain with your snowboard before, you should do fine.) The hiking terrain is well marked, and Anthony does a really great job leading the way. The scenery from the top is great, so bring your camera. The Whole trip lasted about 4 hours. When we finished, my friends and I went to a nearby beach which had hostels nearby located in Las Penitas (bused there)

Tour Provided:
- Jumpsuit
-Cookie and Beer at base of the volcano after you've boarded down
-2 free mojitos back at the Hostel

What to Expect/Bring:
-Hiking Shoes or tennis shoes
-A scarf, extra shirt, or any other garment to tie around your face, so when you board down the mountain you don't get bits of dust and rocks on your face
-Water bottle
-2 rubber bands or long socks to cuff you pant legs, so dirt and rocks don't go into your pants while boarding down
-sun block
-sunglasses and hat
-Expect rocks and dirt, so don't expect to be clean at the end. We all had remnants in our hair, in our clothes, our face, etc.

Difficulty Level: Be prepared to hike 45 minutes in warm/hot weather while carrying about 10- 15 pounds of extra gear. Lots of cardio work involved.

“worth the experience!”
Reviewed May 24, 2011

Cerro Negro boarding is definitely an out of the ordinary thing to do for any tourist. Great hike to the top seeing the crater with the smoke and fumes still happening is pretty nice.
We had Guillermo Bobadilla as our guide and he took care of us and even carried my wifes board to the top. certainly not something many canadians like us can say they had the experience to do.

“make the climb,.. its worth the time!”
Reviewed March 10, 2011

When in Nicaragua and looking for some fun, well head to Leon where volcano boarding on the cerro negro volcano is the top happening thing to do.
Totally a fun experience.Once you made your climb up to the top you will get a fantastic view of the crater where you can feel the heat and actually see bubbling spots and it smoking in different areas.Wow ! and the fun has just begun.
Next you put on your gear and get prepared.Once your ready, grab your board, get on it ,hold on tight and take off. What a rush !
At the bottom there is someone with a radar gun to clock you to see how fast you go or how slow you go.Its all up to you?
