Our family recently spent a glorious Sunday afternoon on a Pictured Rocks cruise. We hadn't taken the cruise in about ten years and had to wonder why we'd waited so long? The cruise itself is wonderful but there was the added benefit of the very professional ship's crew and the extremely informational talk by a US National Park Ranger. I cannot recall the last time I had enjoyed such a wonderful outing.

Thoroughly enjoyed our cruise! The guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. They genuinely seemed interested in making sure all the passengers enjoyed themselves. The cruise lasted three hours, partly due to the Captain trying to position the boat to give us the best possible vantage points! The only reason why I gave the cruise an rating of very good and not excellent is that after visiting such places as Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Pac Coast Hwy 1 ect.... I'm hard to impress. But everything about this cruise was outstanding!

If Munising was a circus, then Picture Rocks would be the Big Top! We did the longer cruise which went out to Spray falls. We were not disappointed. Although the nearly 3 hour round trip was a bit longer than I like to sit in one place, it was worth the time.

I rate this attraction's duration at over 3 hours, because to get the best seats (upper deck, front, right) you have to get there early. We arrived to board nearly 45 minutes early and there were already two groups already waiting in line. By the time for boarding arrived, the line stretched all the way down the dock.

Worth the price and the wait. Seeing Picture Rocks from a boat is something that everyone should do at least once.

Pictures are great, but it's still hard to describe how beautiful this place is unless you see it in person. It's as if someone took the Grand Canyon or the colored cliffs of southern Utah and dropped them into Lake Superior. We took the late afternoon cruise when there were some shadows, and it just kept getting better and better. Each new cliff provided different colors and shapes. We'd read that the cruise was worth it, and it was!

We took the sunset Pictured Rocks Cruise per the recommendation of one of the National Park Service Rangers at the Pictured Rocks National Park. She stated that the sedimentary layers are the most vivid as the sun rises and sets on the cliffs of this park. She was right. It was spectacular!

The cruise sets out along the shoreline and is narrated by the captain as you pass along each point of interest. One rock formation is called "The Great Spirit Gitchigami" and it was told that the natives of long ago feared this formation as the god of Lake Superior aka "Gitchigumi". It showed an outcropping of rock that featured a nose, eyes and the treeline for the hair.

There was also a lone pine tree that had originally grown its roots along a now fallen archway. The tree lives on with its trailing roots reaching back to the mainland.

Another site was an alcove in which the ship just barely fit, giving us a 360 degree view of the cliffs and their splendor.

I would definitely recommend this cruise to those who like natural wonders - a good family activity. It was money well spent. I would do it again.

side note for those traveling with pets:

The cruise service includes free kennels for those traveling with dogs. I would recommend to bring your own bedding and provide a water dish for your pet, as they provide just the crate/kennel. You can also bring your own crate or kennel if you wish. Cats may not like this arrangement. There were only dogs in the kennel area when we were there.
