“Nice, but be prepared.”

Although you can get an idea of the pictured rocks coast from land, you do really need to view it by boat to really see it. Assuming you don't have your own boat/kayak, you'll probably want to take this trip.

That being said, the boat is very slow, making the trip unnecessarily long and tedious. If you don't get a seat on the upper deck on an outside seat, you won't really be able to take good pictures - so it may be worth lining up well in advance of your departure (making a long trip longer).

“One of four Nationally protected Lakeshores.”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

Having been to Arches in Utah, this is Arches at the Lakeshore. Only one company does the cruise up the coastline. I suggest you arrive early and sit upstairs. The lower deck has less views, especially if you're looking to take some great photos. You often end up shooting through window opening other people are looking out. And where pants. I was there in early July and the deer flies were biting the hell out of my legs. I literally had to move around to avoid them. The cliffs are quite beautiful and the sunset cruise can catch them in a different light--all depends upon the weather and clouds though. There are a number of formations that are stunning, the Chapel being the most surprising. We had calm enough waters and the captain slid us completely into one of the cavern opening. Miners Castle Rock can be driven to and Miners Beach is an easy access sandy beach along the cliffs. You see both from the water and it is worthwhile to drive out and visit both.

“A must see”

Definatly the way to see the lakeshore. 2.5 hours can be a bit long for younger kids. Be sure to hit one of the beaches you see on the tour.

“Boat tours!”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

We have taken both the Pictured Rocks boat tour and the Shipwreck boat tour. Both were unique. If I had to choose only one, it would be the Pictured Rocks tour. The shipwreck tour was fascinating, but the shapes and colors of the rocks and water on the Pictured Rocks tour were the best. This is something I could envision doing over and over - especially on a day with calm, flat seas (oops, lake).
