We've been to Grand Island a few times to bike and have camped there one night. It is truly one of the most scenic rides in the state. There is quite a bit of up and down as there are cliffs on the north side. There is one of the best beaches around at the northeast side, which we've often had all to ourselves.
The trout bay campground is one of the most beautiful around. Unfortunately you can't stay there, because it's surrounded by blueberries and has a history of bear activity. We stayed one night on the west side, which was nice too.
The folks at the ferry are very nice, and helpful. If your bike breaks down in the area, they can do repairs for you!
