The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are much better from your own boat than from the commercial cruise boat. If you don't have your own boat you can rent them in town. I think a pontoon boat is the best way to go. You can grill out and have a lot of room on the boat. There is some great snorkeling spots around Grand Island and at the reef in front of the Mosquito Falls.

“Absolutely beautiful any time of year”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

I live in the U.P. and have been visiting Pictured Rocks regularly for the last 25 years. I have skied, camped, and hiked there from end to end, and it continues to draw me back. If you only have an hour, check out Munising falls, just outside of Munising, which is a gorgeous waterfall just minutes from town that requires only a short walk on a boardwalk. If you have half a day, visit and bring a picnic to the Miner's Castle area, do the flat 1.5 mile walk and tour the Au Sable lighthouse, or explore the Sable Falls/Log Slide area. If you have the day, hike out to Chapel Beach or do the loop trail. For the full experience, backpack the length of the park!
If you camp, remember the campgrounds are rustic (no flush toilets or water hookups) and small. They fill quickly all season long, so get there as early in the day as possible and try to figure out who's leaving soon. My personal favorite is Hurricane River because it is close to many attractions and has a nice variety of sites. Little Beaver Lake has lovely surroundings but is very small and the campsites are very close together. Don't forget that there are several state forest campgrounds near the park, including Kingston Lake which is actually within the outer park boundary and is actually quite nice.
Sand Point is a great place to swim when the water is warm enough, and you can walk down the beach to the old life saving station exhibit.
The XC ski trails in the west side of the park are beautiful, well-groomed, and don't get too much use. Snow is always reliable in the Munising area!
Drive carefully and enjoy the scenery on H-58. The east half is very curvy; take your time! If you want to stay at a motel in Munising and don't need anything too fancy, there are some nice locally-owned motels you should consider (Terrace Motel for example) before giving your money to the corporations.

“Miners Beach”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Went to go hiking at Miners Falls but stopped at the beach first. So beautiful and fun we never made it hiking that day. Boys climbed the bluffs and swam in the lake. Beautiful soft sand. Nice inlet area for calm beach area for little ones.

“Beautiful - Must See”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We hiked in the afternoon and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The trails were in excellent shape and very easy to navigate. Wish we could have spent more time exploring.
