1. This is something I've never seen before
2. Basically an entire old city preserved for tourist but without a kitsch feeling to it. It's almost empty of residents making it quiet and nice to walk.
3. Give it at least a whole day. 5 hours min. To see it by day and at evening go for dinner and explore the same area at dark. It's not dangerous nor unpleasant to walk in the dark.
4. Buy a ticket to all sights combined in the west gate entrance from the old lady sitting there.
5. Just walk around the old town and enter everywhere you can.. Usually you'll be asked to show your ticket so save it.
6. Don't bother trying to see it all. Bottom line everything look alike... Amazing but looks alike.
7. Every corner is a madrasah converted into a tiny museum on a different local aspect. It's nice and quick.
8. Don't miss going up one of the panoramic views: the tower at kuhna ark is the best view pay the extra for it. The way up to. The tallest minaret in Uzbekistan is steep, hard and doesn't match the beauty of the tower of kuhna ark.
9. This is a must see in Uzbekistan. Don't pass it.

Itchan Kala has to be the ultimate silk road city. It's been carefully restored and still manages to feel ancient in the way that Samarkand doesn't. The winding streets offer up museums, medressas, mosques and minarets at every corner. There are dozens of major sights to see and hundreds of minor ones. A walk through the residential area shows you a fascinating slice of daily life too. Individual sights are too many to name, but make sure you get up to a high point such as the city walls or the top of a minaret to see the full picture. Be warned that the Islam Khodja minaret is a very steep narrow climb, pitch dark for the first few metres, and no effort is made to limit the number of people squeezing and wheezing up it to crowd into the tiny space at the top. Wherever you are, it is worth the journey to Khiva. Beautiful, awe-inspiring and fascinating.

Worth the small charge to make the climb. Nice views and superb photo ops. I had a chance to shoot photos with lots of children from a local school. It was much much fun.

Spend a day exploring all the nooks and crannies - I could not get enough of both the substantial sights (harems, audience rooms, minarets, etc.) and the portions of the old town where people still live. Close to the entrance, on the left-hand side, is a way to climb to the wall. It's amazing any time of day, but best around sunset - amazing views of the whole old town.

Pay the extra $1, or whatever they are asking, and climb up to the wall. It's worth it. From there you have a view out over the whole old town. A great place for photos.
