“Great Hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013

There is some confusion about the different Malika hotels in Khiva - I stayed at the one in the old city - near the Juma Minaret. At check in I extended my stay I liked it so much! The staff was so kind, one even helped me find the post office after his shift. My room was very clean and quiet... althoughI was on the second floor, every move I made tended to make a noise and I wonder what it sounded like on the 1st floor - eek... I also ate here most nights and the food was amazing! And of course, being in the old city was a great asset - I loved watching the vendors move all day chasing shade and it was close to all the museums.

Room Tip: I was on the second floor near the minaret - but worried that the 1st floor could hear everything si...

The hotel is centrally located, and in between everything which needs to be seen at Khiva. The restaurant in the hotel offers good food, there's Internet, and the staff was friendly and helpfull. As the old town is closed for car traffic, from either car or taxi or bus it will take approximately 500 meters to walk, of course the advantage is that the nights are quiet, as there is no traffic.

The Hotel is right in the middle of the old town, you can see the two main towers from the windows of your room. The service is impeccable, rooms are nicely furnished in wood and have a moutain savour. The food is good and the restaurant outside is recommended, with large tables and Hammocks where you can rest after the visits. The position also allows you to come back in the middle of the day and have a short rest in the hottest hours.

Even though Khiva is perfectly safe to visit, it is literally an end of the world. While I was there internet was down most of the time for instance - it was not the fault of the hotel obviously, so my rating reflects just what depended directly on the hotel itself and its staff, and my impression was extremely favorable. I expected (and was hoping for) a decent basic hotel, but Malika Kheivak did its best to exceed that expectation.

The beds were extremely comfortable (great mattress, comfy large pillows, duvets), heater was working, water pressure was OK. The place also was spotless, perfectly located for sightseeing, and had a particularly friendly staff. Backstreets in the old city are not paved and after the rain were somewhat muddy, and the hotel, mindful of that, does provide a shoe brush. Towels were probably the nicest I have ever seen in any hotel. Breakfasts while not something spectacular did exceed my expectations as well. The only negatives are lack of shelving in clothing storage and the tub while nice is designed primarily for sitting in and using it as a shower is not comfortable. Also its walls are VERY high from the floor.

I would be perfectly happy to sincerely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Khiva.

A few pointers for future visitors, and these pertain not just to this hotel, but to the city itself. 1. The city is essentially a historical museum and the center (where hotels are located) goes dead after 5 PM. Since the overwhelming majority of tourists are the tourbus group types they dine in their hotels with their tourgroups so there are few independent eateries, especially given lack of local demand. If you don't go to eat by 6:30 PM restaurants might start running out of food (tours eat early for some reason) and you might be SOL as far as dinner is concerned.
2. Breakfasts in Khiva and in most of Uzbekistan are served by 9 AM.
3. There is a local airport about 45 min away in Urgench with twice weekly flights from Moscow, so you don't have to fly (and pay for) an extra flight from or to Tashkent.
4. Do explore backstreets of the old city with all those adobe houses. The area is perfectly safe, but can get muddy after a rain.
5. If this is your first stop in Uzbekistan and you don't yet know better do not exchange large sums into local currency. Most people actually strongly prefer US dollars (or other hard currency) and you will have a hard time exchanging Uzbek money back. Also the largest banknote is worth (officially) 50 US cents (and on the black market even less) so you will need to carry Uzbek money around in a box or something.
6. The city itself is easily worth an entire day - not less but not more either - lots of things to see, but it is quite small and everything is close together.
7. Unlike in most of the Middle Eastern countries guides are professional and neither them nor souvenir sellers are pushy.

Again, I'm not sure that everyone on this page is reviewing the same hotel. Those that mention an old Madrassa might have their wires crossed.

Speaking of wires, the WiFi in the lobby worked just fine during our stay. The staff also spoke very good English.

As a tourist destination, Khiva virtually closes down during the off season, so if you travel outside of the peak times make sure you ask the hotel restaurant in advance if you want to eat there.

I won't repeat the minor niggles mentioned by others already, but I will say I think that they all fade into the background when you can step right out of your hotel door and into the old city. Nothing beats being in the middle of the action, and while the Malika Kheivak might not be great, its good enough to enjoy your stay right in the hear of Khiva.

I don't think I am reviewing the same hotel as others on this page. But I double checked the name and think I have it right. This hotel is modern and spacious - in fact the rooms are huge! It's well located in the old city so you can stroll out from your room right into the thick of things. The rooms are clean, and as I said, very large. The staff are pleasant. So, why only 3 stars? Well, it might just be me, but I find these large impersonal hotels less enticing than a little B and B - especially when they get the balance right between comfort and character. The Amulet in Bukhara, to me, is a great example of this balance. In addition, the food (both dinner and breakfast) were on the wrong side of ordinary. In summary - clean modern rooms, below average food, and good service. I think it might be ideal for large tour groups. You decide.

Khiva is small, and the selection of hotels is equally small. This place is probably as good as any. I stayed for two nights, and found the accommodation adequate. Compared to other accommodation in the country, it is below average (but please read on). Cleanliness was below average, wi-fi did not work, staff were less than courteous. However, if you look around while you are in Khiva, you will realise that this is a very poor place. So, you need to put things in context, and appreciate that the area you are staying in and that the whole town can't really be compared with a larger city. The comparisons and ratings made are against other hotels in Uzbekistan, as there is no other way to rate this hotel to provide a realistic review for other travellers. If you're expecting 4 stars (on an international standard) - you really won't find it in Khiva.
