One can envision what life was like during the periods in which each of the successive cities on the site was existent. There isn't great detail of the structures, but the scale is impressive. I recommend it.

A huge site with ruins built by several ancients cultures. Alexander the great came here, and Genghis Khan butchered the inhabitants. A place with a wealth of history that fully deserves its UNESCO World Heritage status. Try to read up a little before you get there, to help understand the centuries of history & civilisations that inhabited the area.
Beware snakes in the brick work! And there are no facilities at all, so take water...it gets very hot.

The ancient monuments are in great shape and you can see the Turkmen govt has taken great pride in making this a top destination.

It is not redone like the places in Uzbekistan. It is interesting, there is a raised hill, where the very old town was, and some interesting buildings. The Great Kyx Kala was very interesting, unusual architecture.
