few things to see at the temple site. the view from here is magnificent. since it is a religious place, appropriate clothing is necessary. try to visit early morning or towards evening. during mid day, it gets unbearably hot and you would hate yourself for having to walk barefoot.

Another way to get in touch with the local culture, not to mention the awesome views one you reach the top.

This temple is situated on top of a rock facing the Indian ocean, in my hometown of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. This temple has lots of historical values to it. Its always a refreshing feeling, when seeing the views from this temple any time of the day. This temple has a very significant value and history in the tamil culture and the religion of hinduism. The views seen from this temple are remarkable, especially, in the morning. There are so many street vendors along the road leading to the temple, and they sell lots of different things from snacks, sweets, crafts and gifts. I've been to this temple so many times from when I was little, and I do get the feel of this temple losing its originality and calm atmosphere because of these vendors. They used to only have one little shop selling pooja items at the temple, and now there are so many vendors and lots of yelling and shouting.

We really enjoyed visiting this Temple and as it was Sunday it was busy with locals and pilgrims. We loved that we could walk around and just blend in. We had to take our shoes off (take socks - hot tarmac) but could take photos without being intrusive. In fact the locals took photos of us too! There are explanations in english and our guide explained the significance of all the activity around us. Really interesting and steeped in ancient history.
