“Old Spanish cathedral”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

Old Spanish cathedral with lots of character but it always feels a bit off to be disturbing worshippers. Like a lot of attractions in the Philippines, there was not a lot of information about its history or relevance. I wanted to know much more.

“KNOCKED 3 TIMES AND SAID MY PRAYERS”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012

Two weddings were almost ending when I arrived at the Cathedral on 12.22.2012. After the wedding parties left the place, I was able to knock 3 times at its front door and then said my prayers.

(Note that 2 days ago, a friend of mine told me that when one is visiting a church for the first time, one must knock at its door 3 times before saying one's prayer requests. Why? = your prayers will be answered).

The main altar and the two pulpits( with their Christmas lights) are my favorite areas inside the Cathedral. The beautiful facades of the Cathedral and the bell tower located closed-by are my favorites as well. The latter are perfect spots for picture-taking.

The other Vigan attractions are within 5-10 minutes walk away such as the Archbishop Palace, Plaza Salcedo, Plaza Vigan, Heritage Village, Fr. Burgos Museum, various shops and eateries.

“A taste of spanish colonial era...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

A world heritage site located in Ilocos sur, it is one of the few spanish colonial town that was kept and maintained to these days. Don't miss spending sometime on this great site when visiting Ilocos region..from the old buildings and cathedral to the famous cobbled stones..also dont forget to get a taste of their empanada, ilocos bibingka and chichacorn etc, usually sold at the plaza specially in the late afternoon/early evening. For those who are a bit adventurous can try the local ilococano delicacy called sinanglaw..and vigan longanisa.

“Vigan's Best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This hefty cathedral (I call it the "Great White Church in Vigan") really amazed me even when i saw it for many times already. Outside, it looks like, woah, it doesn't look good anymore because they have renovated or repainted it, but why don't you get inside to find what you're really looking for--still amazing to see history inside this church. This structure is a must-see.

“Often Overlooked”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

Tourists are often too awe-struck by Calle Crisologo that they overlook Vigan Cathedral (St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral). The somewhat plain facade of the church doesn't do it justice.

PROs:
- Inside is a different story, you immediately realize how old the church is
- Just a few meters from Calle Crisologo and Plaza Burgos where you can grab a snack

CONs:
- Restoration (in the Philippines, in general) can be better
- Several details on the wall and many other places are hidden by paint
