The 8 hour bus trip was more than worth the experience of Lumbini - the birth place of Buddha! I was priveledged to be there at the time of the 22nd prayer for world peace. The atmosphere was calm the people were friendly. I arrived with no accomodation but within 30 minutes was booked into a nice and comfortable hotel room.
Spent an afternoon driving in a rental car with driver who took care of all directions and fees required to go round the many world built stupas... Germany Nepal, Austria, China and my very favourite Myanmar where the Nuns also have a stupa... please many others that after 4 hours of looking I choose not to see....
Beautiful beautiful and more beautiful

We spent one full day in Lumbini visiting Maya Devi and the Peace Temples. Bicycles can be rented for $2 per day near the main gates and are necessary for looking at the Peace Temples, but a guard waits near the entrance of Maya Devi to make sure they are left outside. Shoes and weapons must be left outside the temple grounds as well (there's temple police and a metal detector to check). Inside is a peaceful garden and the Buddhist monuments with monks humming prayers and offering blessings to visitors. The town of Lumbini is small and modest and the entire World Peace Complex can be explored thoroughly in a day, but it's definitely worth paying $10 to see, even after a 10-hour bus ride from Kathmandu.

This is the Birth place of Prince Siddhartha (600 BC) who became Gautama Buddha. The Temple made at this place is named by the name of Prince Siddhartha's mother Maha Maya Devi. This is among the four most important places where Buddhist pay homage to Lord Buddha. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars here in 300 BC.
Maya Devi Temple is a world Heritage site Declared by UNESCO.
