I stayed here for the first three nights of my trip to Nepal and later for a few nights. I stayed in Shiva Guest House 2, which is just outside the city gate and probably a bit quieter than Shiva1. I was nervous of starting out in the reported noise and squalor of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur seemed a more peaceable alternative. The slightly offputting is that there is a 1100 rupee tax to enter the city - 14 USD or so. The upside is that if you bring two passport photos you can get a pass which lasts as long as your visa, giving you as long as you like to enjoy this wonderful city. Kailash and his team will make you welcome. For a reasonable charge they will pick you up at the airport and within minutes of my arrival I was sitting there with a cup of tea and my new city pass. The rooms are modest but comfortable and clean - the staff bend over backwards to help you. The showers are fine though like much of Nepal there are frequent blackouts. There's a limited breakfast menu but you are treated as a special guest if you wander up to Shiva 1, which has a nice restaurant with a comprehensive menu.

We found the SGH1 quite expensive, also they didn't mention anywhere on their website you have to pay the 15$ per person to even enter on Durbar Square.
The room was ok, with nice view over the square, the shower was cold. We had lunch and breakfast and found the food quite expensive and not that good.

We spent 2 nights in Shiva Guest House 2 and overall were very happy with our stay. We checked out both SGH1 and SGH2, and the rooms of SGH2 are definitely bigger and more beautiful, whereas in SGH1 you pay the same price, mainly for the view on the Durbar square. SGH2, however, is directly located outside the entrance gate of the Durbar square, therefore also very central and perfectly located.

We advise to booka room without breakfast. Breakfast seemed rather overpriced and there are plenty of places to have breakfast in Bhaktapur.

Hot water was available around the clock, however the Wifi rarely worked while we were there (it seems it stays turned off during power cuts and in the night).

If you wish the staff can help you arrange transportation back to Kathmandu at a much lower price than the taxi drivers outside would try to charge you.

Room Tip: Stay in Shiva Guest House 2. If in doubt, ask if you can have a look at the rooms of both hotels.

We decided to stay in Bhaktapur instead of Thamel and did not regret it for a second. It was like stepping back in time several centuries especially in the early mornings with people worshipping at the temples, farmers carrying baskets of vegetables and barrels of creamy curd. In the evenings, without electricity, the shops and homes are mostly lit by candlelight. Shiva Guesthouse is a great base to explore this area on foot - we stayed at both Shiva 1 and 2 (the former overlooking Durbar Square and the latter just outside the gate). The entry fee to Bhaktaur for all toursists is $10 per day - Kailiash organised a two week pass for us for $15. He also organised our plane tickets to Pokhara. The restaurant at Shiva 1 has good food for a reasonable price. I would highly recommend Shiva 1 and Shiva 2 to anyone visiting Kathmandu. It's also only about 1 hour to Nagarkot from here, which is very worthwhile on a clear day.

Room Tip: Room 303 at Shiva 1 has good views across the square
