Owner description: Forest Retreat Laos is an eco trekking and tours company with a focus on bringing our customers to beautiful places while bringing opportunities to local communities. We are specialized in treks and kayak trips in the Nam Ha National Protected Area, cycling trips in the Luang Namtha valley and beyond, and complete package tours to discover Northern Laos. By booking your trip at Forest Retreat Laos you help us to directly support the local communities and environment in Northern Laos. Forest Retreat Laos supports the local community substantially by working mainly with local people. We hire English speaking guides from the Luang Namtha area, we hire assistant guides from local villages and we pay villagers close to the National Protected Area to make and maintain our trails. Also these villagers are hired to build and maintain our exclusive jungle retreats. In the case of homestays, the minority people are compensated generously. At the same time, we try to teach the people in these remote villages as much as we can about the environment and the importance of protecting the forest and its animals. All of our treks and kayak trips take place inside the Nam Ha National Protected Area. With the park fees and taxes, that are included in the tour price, we help the local government protect and maintain the beautiful forest in the Nam Ha NPA.

It is risky to over promise and under deliver. The latte i had was very average even by laos western restaurant standards. Please take down the ' best coffee in asia' sign. Its False advertising.

Thanks for your feedback. At the start of this month all 3 of our baristas had to attend a funeral (a multi day event in Laos) whilst we were stuck outside of Laos waiting for our new passports to arrive and so we are sorry you visited during this time and someone inexperienced would have made your coffee. We now have 3 new baristas whom will be fully trained as well as the original 3 so that this will not happen again! Should you pass through Luang Namtha again, come in for a free Latte that we promise will exceed your expectations.

We have just finished our 3 day trip with the Forest Retreat Laos company in Luang Nam Tha and I would highly recommend it if you like the outdoors and dont mind roughing it a bit.

We didnt really see much wildlife but the diversity of the trip - the jungle camp, the homestay and the kayaking made up for that. The guides were great and make an effort to learn the few words the guides teach you as they will be needed in the homestay.

Make an effort to overcome the shyness barrier in the homestay as its more rewarding. We ended up reading a book with some of the kids and they told us the laos words for things.

This company seemed very professional and with the help of the kiwi couple you are put at ease when parting with money and 3 days of your precious holiday! The laos partner greeted us when we returned and asked us about any improvememts we could suggest which I was very impressed with. As they are a relatively new company I wish them the best with their business.

My girlfriend and I happened across Forest Retreat on my birthday and I couldnt have asked for a better place to spend my 29th than at Forest Retreat.

Andre could tell we were a bit tired after our travels so invited us into the cafe and we had a well deserved drink. He then helped us find some nice accommodation and we went back to the cafe for dinner. After they found out it was my birthday Karen made me a cake in the microwave (as there are no ovens in Luang Namtha, until their pizza oven is completed) and we had a few drinks to celebrate.

The next day they organised a complete custom tour for my girlfriend and I and everything we wanted to do on our trek was organised. Our guide Sipan was amazing and spoke 4 different tribal languages, English and Laos. We took books to the villages for the children and had an amazing time. We even visited a tribe that had never seen tourists before. This was a highlight. Being conscious of the impact tourist have upon villages we were very pleased that we were warned not to give the tribal people money or candy and if we did want to offer them something, then Laos and English reading books were a great gift. We were also so incredibly pleased we chose to trek here rather than a more touristic hubs like Chiang Rai and Sapa as our experience was truly authentic and beneficial for the villages. And for once it was nice to see the word Eco not just used as a marketing tool.

I can not speak highly enough of our experiences both in the cafe and on our trek and recommend Forest Retreat to everyone.

An amazing place with the nicest staff. After you've been backpacking for a while, you can have a great western meal and the best coffee at this place.
Going to forest restreat also means supporting the local staff. Forest retreat helps them with their future by teaching them english, cooking and customer service. For me they scored bonus points by doing that!

Lots of possibilaty's for trekkingstours too!

After spending nearly a month in China arriving in Laos was a breath of fresh air and there was no better welcome than Forest Retreat! Forest Retreat has everything any weary traveler could want, from toasted sandwiches to pasta with pesto sauce, they have it all and it is done perfectly!!! They also have fantastic coffee and the best wifi in all of Laos!! I cannot recommend this place highly enough, its a must visit if you are in Luang Namtha!!!
