“Another in my series of don't stay here ever!”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

Staff surly, room just shy of dirty with not enough towels, one bath towel per person, and, we were two women.. Bar did not have any wine, and was quite dark and dingy. Worst experience was dinner. We were two solo travelers, and being women to boot, it took over 20 minutes to get a menu, and another 45 minutes to get a meal. Seems they book almost exclusively to tours.
Try and find other accommodations.According to other reviews this is the "best in Tanjore", maybe take a long road trip down to Pondicherry, might be worth the extra time in the car.

Sangam is the only decent place to stay in this historic city. The hotel has recently been renovated and the rooms are a lot cleaner and the bathrooms much better. It is located very close the the main attraction of the town-- The Big Temple. It is also close to other notable spots such as Thiruvarur, Thiruvaiyaru, etc.

Unfortunately, connectivity to this town is not well developed. The closest airport it Thiruchy but flights are more from Chennai than from other areas. The trains almost always shows as full only to be empty on the days you travel. Does not suit tourists who want to book in advance and not on tatkal. The bus service is fine but can be quite taxing. Although, I recently discovered the joys and torments of sleeper bus travel and there a few from Chennai and Bangalore.

The property itself has one main restaurant and a decent pool. Most people come to this hotel when they want to see the 1000 year-old Big Temple. Food is decent-- quality has dropped off late. However, the room quality has improved substantially. The front desk and management are extremely eager to help and please customers.

The hotel is expensive at about Rs. 6000 a night. They checkout time is noon-- which is strange as most people travel here on buses or trains that usually come in early in the morning. If the hotel should change its fare structure to 24 hours, the value of this hotel can become extraordinarily enticing. Otherwise, the traveller pays 2 days charges for coming in early morning and leaving at night.

The beds and comforters are extremely comfortable.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the main road as it can get noisy early morning. Choose the pool side.

Of the nine different 4- and 5-star hotels we stayed throughout India, this was far and away the worst and in fact the only one where we questioned the hygiene of the place. However, it was not intolerable and the two most important things - the bed and toilet - both seemed brand-new. Otherwise the interior is indeed something like a Soviet Intourist hotel - very dated, dark and 1970s.

Unlike every other hotel we stayed at, it was clear that surfaces were only rarely being cleaned. The glass in the interior windows was smudgy, the desk in the room had residue, the floors in the restaurant needed to be swept AND mopped. The atrium was dusty with a very sad tree in the bottom coated with a thick layer of dust. Considering the cost of labor in India there is really no excuse why a hotel should not be spotless and cleaned frequently (as we found in every other hotel on our trip).

The food in the restaurant was good and we did not get ill from it, but indeed the service was chaotic, usually we had to "grab" a waiter to get their attention.

The Internet was not working, in fact when checking in the very good clerk advised us to contact the IT help person in case it wouldn't work... seems she already knew it didn't work properly.

Central location.

Since the alternatives in the town are said all to be worse, I guess I would stay here again though.

Apparently, there isn't a really good hotel in Thanjavur, so the Sangam isn't a terrible choice. It's quite alright for a night or two, though way too expensive for what it is. The hotel is very, very dated. The lobby is rather big but completely soulless, cold with almost no furniture. The bar is a travesty really - dull, smelly, with not the slightest hint of imagination. In three days we didn't see anybody getting even close to the pool. It didn't look very inviting anyway.

What pulled it off for us was the restaurant, or better the food, since the restaurant looks as dull as the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was nothing to rave about, but we had two dinners and one lunch here and found the food excellent.

As far as location is concerned, it wasn't far way from the Meenakshi Temple. The guard was kind enough to get a tuk-tuk for us, which cost very little.

In general, there aren't too many hotel choices in Thanjavur, and the lack of competition shows. There's such a lack of imagination and detail, it's almost appalling. Someone should give those hotels a run for their money.

Welcome with a drink. Small elevator. Dark and "fifties" restaurant.
Inefficient service in the restaurant. Avoid the sweet corn soup. No acceptable wine list.
Tiny swimming pool.
Dark bar somewhere in a corner.
