“Off the beaten track”

... but worth the detour. Well maintained, and quite tranquil. Some restoration work in progress. Liked this temple more than the Big Temple at Tanjore!

The pages of Chola history will be blank if Rajendra Chola were to be left with out proper mentioning. It is Rajendra Cholan who conquered the whole north India upto Ganges and Java, Sumatra, Malay, Eelam, Kadaram, Kazhakam and other island. He proved his military prowess by crossing the river Ganges by forming bridge of elephants. RajaRajan was able to rule the entire Chola Mandalam peacefully because of the military vigour and valour of his son Rajendra Cholan. After him Rajendra Chola constructed a temple very similar to that the Big Temple, Thanjavur and called it as Gangai konda Cholapuram. Very beautiful Siva Temple but not at par with the Big Temple of Thanjavur. Gangai konda Cholapuram is very familiar for its Siva Temple and huge lake behind the temple. The inner corridor of that temple will be always humid and the sun rays will directly glitter on the Prime deity. But the construction was incomplete. and the maintenance of the temple by the ASI is not up to the mark. Rajendra Chola tried his level best to bring closer to the elegance and grandeur of the Big Temple, Thanjavur but succeeded 40% only. The general public who visit this temple are requested to maintain the sanctity of the temple and leave it in a better position for posterity.

Great workmanship.
The architecture had been planned in such a way that the sun rays fall on the main Deity. Even if there is no power, lights, we can see the main Deity.
Regret the conservation is poor.
We are not competent to preserve such monuments for our future generations.
