“very average hotel”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

this is very average hotel and not worth the value. we stayed for a day and nothing was to our expectation - right from front desk, room service or cleanliness. Noisy A/c and made the stay very un comfortable.

Room Tip: better to stay in Tiruchy or kumbakonam hotels.

We stayed in a Non-AC room from 15th to 16th August. Since we were checking in by early morning 3.30AM, I was a little bit concerned about it, but everything was smooth. One more advantage was the 24 hours check out.We paid 935INR for a Non-AC room including complementary breakfast which is a great deal. The rooms were tidy enough. The staff's were professional and friendly as well. The breakfast was not great, but ok. Since it is very close to the railway station you will hear train horn's often, which might be disturbing for some people. Altogether we were happy for choosing PLA.

Highlights:
1) 24 Hours checkout
2) Complementary breakfast.
3) 935 for a Non-Ac room.
4) Friendly staff.

This is the prperty located about 300 mtrs from Thanjavur railway station and best place to stay as transit location. Rice Bowl restaurant serves a good south Indian breakfast, which is complementary with stay.

we stayed at PLA residency early March 2012. we stayed in 1 family room and 2 deluxe rooms.
as we arrived late we decided to just stay as it looked quite clean. we had aircond trouble in 1 of the rooms and was relocated after some time. but the rooms in general were very dusty and all of us ended having a flu.
my greatest issue with the room was that the family room was also used as a store and they will knock on the door to get their linen supply not even bothered that there are guests staying in the room. i was pretty shocked and when i questioned them they had no answer for us.
the breakfast was quite nice and we enjoyed our breakfast at their very beautiful restaurant. workers were a little slow but we had gotten use to that : )

Good, convenient location (not far from the train station, further from the bus station, though); and reasonably clean (by Indian hotel standards). Plus, at 1150 rupees -- plus tax -- for an AC single room, it was priced correctly. My only complaints are (i) front rooms have a lot of street noise, while the back rooms face the train tracks (which are VERY close to the hotel, and therefore very noisy), (ii) the complementary breakfast isn't very good (no juice, no fresh fruit), and (iii) the staff at the front desk was very un-helpful when I asked for advice on how to get to the temple by bus (it's not far away (though too far to walk), and very EASY to get to by bus...but the front-desk lady was determined that I go by cab or auto-rickshaw).

Room Tip: all rooms are noisy

Close to the rail station, but not a very comfortable place. The lobby area is dingy. There was a children's play area directly outside our room, but this wasn't really a problem, as there were few children. Seems like they don't get many foreign visitors. Friendly staff.

I travelled to Thanjavur with my wife and mom recently. During our stay we stayed at Hotel PLA Residency which was suggested to us by one of my team members who is a localite of Trichi.
My observations of the hotel and its facilities are as follows:
Booking & Reservations:
Booking was done over the phone. Quite hasselfree. Did not ask for any advance as we were expected to reach within a couple of days. Jusrt noted my name, mobile number and expected time of arrival.
Hotel's Location:
I drove down from Chennai. And the hotel as easy to locate. Almost everyone knew the hotel's location. If you are travelling by train, it should not take you more than Rs. 15 to reach the hotel as the hotel is within 150m of the railway station. The old bus stop is slightly further away and might take you about 30 to 40 rupees in an auto to reach the hotel.
If you are driving down, no need to worry about car parking. Though one needs to park his car right on the main road infront of the hotel, it is manned by a security guard round the clock.
As pointed out by other reviewers, the hotel is about 5 mins driving distance from the Palace and the Big Temple, the otwo main attaractions of Thanjavur.
Check In:
On arrival the check in was simple. Standard documentation. I had taken a tax inclusive per night rate over the telephone and there was no change in the amount. They however, asked for some advance, which is customary.
Rooms:
The hotel has 3 types of rooms. Suite (accomodates 5 pax), Delux and Standard (both accomodate 2 pax). We had taken the Delux room with the provision of an extra bed. The rooms were extremely clean and the toilets were well disinfected. The linens and towles were clean and crisp. However, the draw back is that the rooms did not have a balcony. We got a road facing room. The rooms in the rear end of the hotel face the railway tracks. Hence, it is better not to take up these rooms as one can be disturbed by the noise of the trains. One could hear the trains and their whistles from the road facing rooms as well, but it was far too mild to disturb one's sleep.
The hotel provided an extra cot for the additional person. I would like to add here that the breadth of the cot was not great. I could accomodate myself but not too comfortabley. And I am not very obese.
The bathrooms provided hot and cold water almost always.
Room Service:
Room service was quite good. We had some special instructions about the tea which we ordered and everytime they followed the instructions perfectly.
Food:
The hotel has an attached restaurent called the "Rice Bowl". What I could make out is that residents of Thanjavur city consider it as amarquee destination (this is my assumption based on my observations only). Both times we visited the restaurant, there was an equal distribution of inhouse and outside guests. We tried the North Indian and South indian cuisines and found them to be quite nice. However, there seems to a severe man power crunch and orders did take a while in getting fulfilled. For example, there was only one person to take orders for the entire restaurant of about 12 tables. The perennial language issues did play a role with the restaurant waiters, who did not understand any other langauge other than the vernacular. I guess this was the reason, only one person was entrusted with collecting orders who understand English, Hindi and the verbacular as well.
Check Out and Billing:
Check out was effortless and I did not observe an inaccuracies in the bills.

Room Tip: Do not take a room which faces the railway tracks. Your sleep quality might get effected.
