“10th wonder of India”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

this is the most spectacular temple built on vast land. This is the first temple where there is no entry fee & Pujaries do not ask for money for Puja. Most other Pujarees in other temples ask for donations & the more you donate better puja they will do. This is very unfair.

“Time machine”
Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

Visited the Temple on 17th Feb. Mesmerized by the beauty of the Shivalingam and the size of the Temple complex. Thanks to Archeological Survey of India, surroundings are well maintained. The first look at the Temple itself takes us back into history and reminds the magnanimity of mighty Cholas, and the humility they had towards Almighty God.

Made me wonder from where and how they gathered such huge rocks? The planning and execution behind it. I was told, they might have Planned the block sizes Assemled it row by row, created ramps by filling sand, worked from top and exposed it. Quite a challenging job.

Followed by the add ons done by The Nayakas and Sarfoji kings. I was told the entire temple was covered with gold and the invaders looted and destroyed it partly, later repaired by the Nayakas. We can make out Why Tanjavur is called Cradle of Indian Classical Art.

“Truly a grand structure”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

The Bhrihadeesvara name for this temple was given by the Marathas when they ruled this area a few hundred years ago. The original name given is Rajarajeshwaram after the creator Rajaraja Chola, the illustrious father of the more illustrious son Rajendra Chola. I have written a much more elaborate review of this temple at whatisindia.com but can only say this. If you live in or visit South India and have not seen this temple, then you have wasted your time and opportunity.

“Awe inspiring magnificent structure”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

- Sheer scale, grandeur, magnificence and overall proportion of the temple overawes anyone

What can be done better:
- Overall maintenance, cleanliness and facilities to the traveller
- Some nice cafe and good souvenir shop right at the premises
- Better faciities such as information kiosks, signages and upkeep
