“Nice and Simple”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

I have stayed 4 months at Rahul Guest House. It is a nice place to stay in Bodhgaya, well situated, close from everything. The rooms are very clean, but it can be very noisy sometimes due to many festivals around. The staff is very helpful even if they look not very friendly from first impression. The price is ok, you can find cheaper place in Bodhgaya, but I prefer to pay a good price for a clean room. There are restaurants close by where you can find cheap food.
One more thing, if you are going to Bodhgaya just for sightseeing, try to avoid December, full of people and prices are highly going up.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel, there will be less noise.

The room was clean but expensive. The staff was not very friendly. There were a lot of mosquitos so I asked for a refilling of the mosquito plug. She was not very motivated to give me one. When I asked if I can store my bag the day I leave 'cause my train was in the evening they first wanted me to keep the room and pay half the price. Finally they agreed that I can just leave my bag (which was really small) somewhere. I am sure you can find a better GH in Bodhgaya.

Maybe it's because we had such a bad experience on the other side of town before coming here, but this place saved us. We got the room right inside the front door...so it was nice and cool. The rooms upstairs seemed nice and cool as well, but I have a bad knee. The bottom level room may have a crying baby across the hall, but having a lot of nieces and nephews, this didn't bother me. My only complaint would be no wifi, but you can't win it all. I had to try and switch to the place next door that had wifi...then of course the wifi in the whole town went out the whole time I was there.

Basically you can use the wifi at the restaurant across the street, and if you ask me, for the money, Rahul's can't be beat. Mosquitoes were minimal here. If you're looking for a great motorbike tour of the area, ask for Vicky, the nephew of the family. We enjoyed that as well, and he was quite helpful in many other ways as well. Just be prepared for all the people asking for money and offering their services to you in Bodhgaya. You will be BOMBARDED.

Finding decent accommodation at reasonable price in Bodh Gaya from Nov-Feb is no mean feat. Hotel prices in Bodh Gaya and surrounding area have increased by 300 - 500% since 2008.

At the cluster of hotels where the Rahul is located, prices are greatly inflated.  If you continue on the path past Rahul 200 yards you will encounter a small village where prices are more reasonable.  Do not forget to strenuously haggle.

Be careful with Rahul; he will rip you off if he can. The Rahul is right next to a nasty mosquito breeding area at the back where smelly stagnant water collects. The walk from the Rahul to the Temple is very dusty and you will need a mask to protect your lungs. The road right outside Rahul is very dusty and dust comes up into the Rahul rooms.

Bodh Gaya is a great place to visit and used to be a sleepy village consistent with the peaceful tenor of the site of the Buddha's enlightenment.  However since 2008, tourism, traffic and pollution have increased to the point at which the air in Bodh Gaya is clogged with dust, making essential respiratory protection in the form of an effective mask for the prevention of bronchitis.

We felt lucky to have found a room available at the Rahul GH. It's very clean with plenty of hot water. The location is excellent -- a bit out of the fray but walking distance to everything. There was a lot of construction going on when we were there in November 2011 -- massive new meditation center and lots of guest houses, some of which were being built across the street from the Rahul which will substantially block the view onto the rice paddies and green fields. Most of the family members who run the Rahul do not speak much English which I felt accounted for their aloofness. But as we stayed for two weeks, they eventually warmed up to us. No hesitation in recommending this fine guest house. We paid Rs 600 for a large double room.

Room Tip: Room #201, on the top floor, shares the terrace with one other room. Extra space and nice for sitti...
