Description: Being a sea-faring nation the Portuguese were intrepid explorers and among the first Europeans to visit the Cape of Good Hope in the 1500s. In the Colonial era that followed they left their mark in various places on the African continent – Angola, Moçambique and South Africa. From the indigenous people they learnt the usefulness of chilies (piri-piri), which they combined with more traditionally Portuguese ingredients such as olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. Where European Portuguese food is delicately flavoured, Portuguese– Southern African cuisine is fearlessly fiery. Canimambo is a family run restaurant, where you can meet Carla, the Mozambican/Portuguese owner, husband Lance, sons Sean and Wesley, daughters Courtney and Nicole and son-in-law Nando. We pride ourselves in authentic cuisine, friendly service and a cozy atmosphere. Look out for the following when visiting us:The breadbasket: Portuguese rolls are an absolute treat and a meal within a meal. Figados de galinha á piri-piri (piri-piri chicken livers) is a local institution. Use the bread to mop up the lovely juices and you will understand why they never go out of fashion. Batata frita - hands down the South African Portuguese make the best potato chips in the country. Double fried with lots of salt and dollops of vinegar on demand, makes it comfort food in the extreme. Espetada de bife - The Portuguese espetada consists of cubes of perfectly aged rump steak, bay leaves and lemon dipped in course salt before landing on the grill. The natural bay leaf flavour permeates the meat and the salt seals those meaty juices in. Charred on the outside and succulent inside, it’s a steak meal with a difference. Galinha piri-piri (Piri-piri chicken) arguably the most popular dish in South Africa served hot, mild or with lemon butter sauce. Camarão grelhado na brasa (flame grilled prawns), sardinhas assadas na brasa (flame grilled sardines) and ervilhas com chourico e ovos escalfados (pea stew with chourico and poached eggs) are some of the other popular Portuguese dishes on the menu.

“Good meal in a small town”
Reviewed March 9, 2014

At first site, the town of Graskop is not very impressive and we wondered if we would find a decent restaurant. However, we had a very good meal here in pleasant surroundings There also seemed to be several other places in town which looked decent.

“Waiter was great but didn't make up for the food/wait”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

We were seated very quickly and were immediately attended to by a waitress. She was very helpful, friendly and took our orders with no issues.

However, we ended up waiting an hour and 15 minutes for our food, Even for a busy restaurant this long of a wait is excessive.

The food when it arrived was not great either - the chicken in my chicken burger was overdone and my girlfriend's chicken giblets were not properly cooked. The waitress did her level best to address this and she removed the giblets off our bill. It was, however, insufficient at that stage to improve our mood!

All credit to the service our waitress provided but I hope the management learn from this and do better going forward. It seems others have enjoyed the restaurant so I suspect more consistency may be necessary as we were not provided the same service.

On valetines weekend you should have made a reservation to insure prompt service from the kitchen.Your food order was also place after most of the other tables including one of 25 people had ordered, When you where seated by my daughter the waiter, she explained to you that you would have to be patient. There was a mistake with the giblets which we removed from the bill and apologiesed for, but the burger is served with smoked chicken breast (over cooked - how?) and your husband ate it all. Every other table was extremely happy and complimentary. Never-the-less we apologies for not meeting your expectations.

“excellent”
Reviewed January 22, 2014 via mobile

We turned up at Canimambo restaurant at approx 20:45 to find out they were due to close at 21:00.....was this a problem?? No! Still seated and looked after us like we'd turned up hours before they were due to close! Food was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect for what we'd planned as a quiet meal out after a busy day. Thank you to everyone there!

“Good food and attentive service”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

Graskop has a bunch of nice looking restaurant but few have a charming personal story like this one. We rather enjoyed reading the story on the menu and then choosing from the various Portuguese inspired dishes on the menu. I can't say if they were authentic but they were tasty and the setting was lovely. The service was also very good - there was a bit of a delay with one of our starters and the waiter was charming in explaining what had happened and giving us to choice of how to deal with it. When it arrived, like the rest of the dishes, it was very good.
