Description: Being a sea-faring nation the Portuguese were intrepid explorers and among the first Europeans to visit the Cape of Good Hope in the 1500s. In the Colonial era that followed they left their mark in various places on the African continent – Angola, Moçambique and South Africa. From the indigenous people they learnt the usefulness of chilies (piri-piri), which they combined with more traditionally Portuguese ingredients such as olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. Where European Portuguese food is delicately flavoured, Portuguese– Southern African cuisine is fearlessly fiery. Canimambo is a family run restaurant, where you can meet Carla, the Mozambican/Portuguese owner, husband Lance, sons Sean and Wesley, daughters Courtney and Nicole and son-in-law Nando. We pride ourselves in authentic cuisine, friendly service and a cozy atmosphere. Look out for the following when visiting us:The breadbasket: Portuguese rolls are an absolute treat and a meal within a meal. Figados de galinha á piri-piri (piri-piri chicken livers) is a local institution. Use the bread to mop up the lovely juices and you will understand why they never go out of fashion. Batata frita - hands down the South African Portuguese make the best potato chips in the country. Double fried with lots of salt and dollops of vinegar on demand, makes it comfort food in the extreme. Espetada de bife - The Portuguese espetada consists of cubes of perfectly aged rump steak, bay leaves and lemon dipped in course salt before landing on the grill. The natural bay leaf flavour permeates the meat and the salt seals those meaty juices in. Charred on the outside and succulent inside, it’s a steak meal with a difference. Galinha piri-piri (Piri-piri chicken) arguably the most popular dish in South Africa served hot, mild or with lemon butter sauce. Camarão grelhado na brasa (flame grilled prawns), sardinhas assadas na brasa (flame grilled sardines) and ervilhas com chourico e ovos escalfados (pea stew with chourico and poached eggs) are some of the other popular Portuguese dishes on the menu.

“Good medicine for cold and wet weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

Cold, wet and misty do not make ideal camping weather, but our visit to this restaurant made it the worthwhile. The food was flavorful and well prepared, the service friendly and efficient and the atmosphere very pleasant. We will definitely come again if we are in the area and also strongly recommend it to friends

“Perfect endings”

Perfect end to a trip to God's window especially after craving prawns for the entire weekend! Real touch of Mozambique. The outside fire and cocktail bar adds to the charm.

“Indifferent service and food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

We had so looked forward to dinner at this restaurant for a taste of real Portuguese food, and recalling memories of meals in Lourenco Marques in Mozambique in the 1960’s.

The ambience in the restaurant was pleasant.

Everything else from the service to the food was indifferent to bad.

We had in person booked a table a day before in the smoking area, and shown where the smoking area was. On arrival we were told that the smoking area was outside (not the area we were shown when booking). As it was cold, we accepted a table inside in a non-smoking area.

We ordered chicken livers peri-peri as starters. One order was for mild and the other for medium. Our waitron was more interested in the soccer and boxing on the television that he was in us. When the starter arrived, he did not know which was the mild or the medium. He went back to the kitchen to check, and still presented the wrong dish to each diner. We had to ask the waitron for bread to soak up the sauce.

For mains we ordered the lamb stew with coconut rice and the calamari dish.
The lamb stew was tasty but tough and with very little (to none) evidence of coconut.
The calamari was cold, tough, tasteless and the rice was soggy. I could eat very little of it.

Contrary to other reviews, service was too quick and our main course arrived with the remnants of our starter still on the table. Bottles of beer and empty glasses of wine were not from the table when replenished.

Would we eat there again? No.

The real issue here is whether to keep an entire room as a smoking area because of one table. I made a decision to change the smoking area to non smoking, due to demand from non smokers. Unfortunately smokers have to learn to compromise.

“Wonderful Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

I have become a big fan of Mozambican food because of this restaurant. We had dinner here one night and really enjoyed this flavorful cuisine. I had the Chicken Chacuti and it was fall-off-the-bone tender and so well seasoned. My husband really enjoyed his dinner as well. The service was friendly and efficient.

The only reason I gave this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that there were only two vegetarian entrees and they were out of one of them by 7:30 that night, so my daughter had to order the vegetarian lasagna, which was a disappointment.

My suggestion would be to add another vegetarian entree to the menu, but if you stick to the Mozambican meat or shrimp entrees, you will be delighted.
