Westlodge Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #2 of 16 Graskop B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 12, 2013

We highly recommend Westlodge B&B. Although it rained cats and dogs during our three night stay in July, our reception here couldn't have been warmer or sunnier. Martin and Frances go all out to make your stay comfortable, from heaters and electric blankets on crisp sheets (to take away the winter chill) to recommending restaurants, driving routes and activities. Martin even offered to take us hiking on a unmarked trail in Blyde River Canyon. Note that although it may be pouring in Graskop, the rest of Blyde River Canyon is probably clear, so plan on driving the panorama route no matter what the weather. (You can always come back to God's Window in the afternoon, as it is often in fog and clouds in the morning.)

We had two large, comfortable rooms next to the street (one for our teen daughter) and initially I was afraid they would be noisy as the B&B is on a busy road. However, there is virtually no traffic at night and we all slept very soundly (and I am a light sleeper). Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. In addition to the cold buffet of cereals, fruit and freshly baked muffins, Martin and Frances will cook up a full English breakfast for you: eggs, sausage, bacon, grilled tomato, potatoes -- whatever you'd like.

There is free WiFi in the dining room and a lovely living room where you can just relax after a day of touring or hiking. Martin and Frances will also cook dinner for you if you give them a heads up in the morning. There are free cookies and port in your room which makes for a nice late afternoon snack.

If you are a dog lover and you're missing your pooch, you're in luck. Westlodge B&B has three resident dogs, but the one who won our hearts is Misty, a large, friendly, white Swiss Shepard who loves to play. (The dogs don't have the run of the place, so you may barely see them most days.)

Westlodge B&B is immaculately clean and charming and the hosts are hard to beat.

We stayed at the Rozen Luxury en Suite bedroom which looks exactly like the picture on the website. The entire place was very cozy with nice victorian details like the entire house. Although we arrived very late Martin gave us a very warm welcome and we immediately felt like home. The room was nicely decorated, with a cast iron bath, Victorian cast iron bath; separate shower; two vanity hand basins; separate WC and bidet with satellite TV and hospitality tray including some yummy sherry to taste. As it was winter time Martin switched on the electric heater under the blanket on the bed which was perfect.

The breakfast has everything you need like fresh coffee, jam, a butter with a nice "good morning (in german actually :)), eggs the way you desire and corn-flakes, cereals with fresh fruits.

Addtionally Martin and his wife gave us very helpful recommendation for dinner in Graskop (Glass House - which served very delicous food) and things to see on the Panaroma road.

Martin is the kind of host you just have to like - he is very warm-hearted and we regret that we could only stay one night.

The Westlodge is located at the far end of Graskop close to the road to God's Window (which is approx. 10km away). We were welcomed by Richard who knows how to treat guests. He knows well the area and helped us to make the most of our 2 days in Graskop. The Westlodge looks romantic and is kept tidy. The garden is lovely. We stayed in a house separated from the main house. The room in the house was big, a shower and a bathtub was available in the room. A nice breakfast is served in the main house were you can choose between a continental or full breakfast. The homemade bisuits are delicious. Internet for guests is not available at the premises, but in graskop, in case one needs it.
We recommend to have dinner at the canimambo (first choise) and the glass house. We also recommend to see the lisbon falls, god's window, wonder view and to take a bath in the mac mac pools (must do). We do not recommed to see Pilgrim's Rest as it appears to be a tourist trap.

My friend and I stayed in the B&B on our way to the Kruger National Park. The owners of the house was not there but they had a friend take care of us, (Richard). We could not have asked for a more friendly, knowledgeable and lovely person - he knew the area like the back of his hand!

The house is beautiful and the bedrooms are wonderful. We stayed in a 2 bed room facing the street. We went out for dinner, and came back to a nice warm room and the electric blankets turned on, oh and the sherry in the room was a nice touch. I loved the bath!! Breakfast was perfect. Will stay there again if I ever get to visit South Africa again.

My only regret . . I was not there during summer to see the garden in full bloom, gosh - the garden is nice!

We spent 3 wonderful nights here. The Victorian style house was a refreshing change and very pretty.
It has been designed to high standards and extremely well kept.
We stayed at the Rozen (I think) suite which had its own entrance for a private and quiet stay.
We found spotlessly clean, specious, charming bedroom. The bed was fantastic, king sized, with electric blanket and superb white cotton linen.
Best sleep quality ever!
The freestanding bath was fun and beautiful. There were separate shower, separate wc+bidet and 2(!) hand basins as well. All clean and shiny.
Breakfast was excellent too.
The managers Tina and Richard were friendly, welcoming and attentive. They gave us lots of information about the area and some very good tips.
No doubt that it was one of the best guest houses we stayed at during our travel to South Africa.
Every moment of our stay was superb.
We would highly recommend Westlodge B&B as it surpassed our expectations.

We spent one night here (coming from Kruger going via Blyde River canyon). It was an excellent choice.

While the contents of the building have drawn adverse criticism from several of your members, and while they do not reflect my own subjective taste, they have obviously been assembled with thought and care and will be appreciated by many guests. The house itself has been designed and finished to high standards, and oozes quality throughout.

Our host, Martin Eekhout, was most helpful in an exchange of e-mails arranging our booking, and in the flesh was welcoming and an easy conversationalist. We did not meet his wife Madie until breakfast that she prepared the next morning, earlier than usual at our special request. She too was most helpful and the consensus view of our party of three was that the breakfast was the best of five venues at which we stayed to and from Kruger.

We had in the Rozen suite, which was spotless, comfortable and spacious, as was the Fleur de Lys west garden room occupied by our companion.

The establishment desrves its four-star grading, and I shall recommend it to friends seeking a stopover in the area.

The victorian style guesthouse is extremly well kept, every detail of its decoration is chosen with care. There is a beatiful garden full of roses and on the well kept old furnitures you find piles of beautiful magazines about animals and flowers and much more. Martin, the owner of the house is very welcoming and attentive. There were so many little surprises like a rose on the pillow when we came back from dinner. (Calimambo was a good recomondation). Martin is at the same time a very personal and a professional host and he was able to give us lots of very special information for travelling in SA. It is defenetly one of the best venues I have ever been (of more than a houndred) in the counry with a good spirit in the house.
