“Fantastic place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

The roadhouse is located approx 20 kilometres away from the Hobas entrance of the Fish River Canyon. It's decorated with vintage cars as well as motoring and film nostalgia. It's quite a funky place to spend a few days. The staff are very friendly and eager to help out.

We camped here for 3 nights (non camping facilities also available). There are designated campsites and each of them are kitted out with a braai pit, power box, water supply and an overhead light. There are lots of communal washing up areas and ablutions available. The communal areas are also cleaned on a daily basis and are immaculate. There's not much available for campers in terms of rations so ensure you're well stocked up before you get here (braai wood is available).

Other facilities include a decent bar/restaurant, pool and wifi. There are activities available at the roadhouse such as horse riding and there's also a 5km trail in the Godwana Canon Park Reserve.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our Canyon Roadhouse and like to thank you for your positive feedback. However, we do not offer horseback excursions. The horses which you saw are just enjoying their life as "pensioners", adding a bit of living nostalgia to the Roadhouses' theme of "history of transport". You are right: There is no store in the Fish River Canyon area. So we might indeed consider extending our petrol station at the Canyon Roadhouse by adding a proper shop for all kind of products self-caterers are looking for.

We stayed here for one night and wished it could be longer! The museum was interesting and detailed the history of the region. The food was great, although the restaurant was quite smokey. The old car collection in the restaurant and around the property is very unique. Our room was spacious, thoughtfully decorated, comfortable, and very clean. It was very quiet at night which we appreciated. The pool looked great but it was winter, so of course no one went in. The staff was helpful and very friendly. It is a lovely property and we recommend it to others.

Canon Roadhouse – in the Godwana Canon Park Nature Reserve (30.06.2012) Fish River Canyon Area
Park was established when Godwana bought up Farmland adjacent to the Fish River Canyon in 1995 dismantling fences, setting up waterholes and reintroduced indigenous species that once occurred in the area.

Drive over Namibian border to Roadhouse was interesting…. (Make sure you get to the border posts early to avoid any queuing) - Then lots of gravel on the C13, then C37, C10 (Ai-Ais road) and then back onto the C37 – rutted gravel all the way (alternative (easier) route would be to take the B1 (tar) all the way until the Ai-Ais turn-off, off the B1).
Got a puncture within the first 120km of travelling (luckily this was our only puncture of the trips 6800km though ‘MacGyver” hubby quickly had this sorted.) Saw many Springbuck, Zebra, and Ostriches all along the road once in the Godwana Nature Reserve and even a Vulture and Eagle.
Before reaching Canon Roadhouse drove to the Fish River Canyon (turned off the C37 and some 56km along) - what really incredible views (see my Fish River Canyon Review).
Canon Roadhouse part of the Godwana Canon Park Reserve (Godwana Collection) and is quirky and really recommended. Rooms on suite with adequate hot shower, twin beds, tea station with electric kettle, clean ironed duvets and linen, prettily decorated in Desert reds and yellows with Vintage Cars being the theme.
Roadhouse yard and walls adorned with vintage cars and car tools and parts – so interesting and old world – loved it!
Reception is a truck! The bar is adorned with car ornaments and interesting motor stuff and dining room has a collection of cars with the table settings in between vintage cars/trucks and two warm cozy fireplaces. Dinner, a three course meal, which was included in the cost of our accommodation rate was selected from a large al la Carte menu. For starters I had Escargot/ Hubby had a salad, Main course, I had stuffed fillet of Springbuck (chili on the side) and Howard had a T-bone steak (one of the best steaks he had in Namibia) and an ice cream dessert. Tea and coffee was also served. Breakfast the next morning was excellent with a wide selection of cereal, fruits, home baked breads and yogurts, then Eggs, bacon and sausage to order. Our puncture was conveniently repaired on the premises that morning at a reasonable rate while we had breakfast – we filled up with petrol (cash only) and we were then on our way.
We really enjoyed our stay here and I have no hesitation recommending the Canon Road House for both a couples and family stays (boys will love this place). The Roadhouse is not just for car buffs/motor heads as it is a treat of vintage that we all can enjoy.

Room Tip: Request rooms looking out to the veld and road

I stayed here twice: back in 2004 and again late 2009. In 2004 it was still relatively small, but we loved the place right away. Great rooms, friendly people and good food. The second time it was different but just as good. There were much more rooms, a nice pool to cool of, but still friendly people and good food. The atmosphere is great and you feel like spending time in luxury in the remote deserts of Southern Namibia. Fish River Canyon is not far away and the roads towards the Canon Roadhouse are very well maintained gravel roads. When going back to the south of Namibia I will definately go back to see what has changed again. Not much after our last visit a new building with bar and old vintage cars would open, so curious about that.

Always stop here for a nice meal. Atmosphere great. Staff very friendly. Oasis!!! If you like old cars and days gone, this is the place for you. Nice shop. Fuel available in the middle of nowhere. Cold drinks and a smile in the Namibian sun!

We stayed for one night in this lodge, close to the view point of Fish River Canon. The decoration aims at reminding the American Far West, there are a lot of old cars. Confortable and clean room, good food.
My husband forgot his Iphone at the lodge, and the manager arranged to send it back to our tour operator in Windhoek at their expense. When we called the lodge, they said all was already arranged. So we would say they have very good service.

We only stayed here for one night and while I found the decoration with car parts a little hokey, I thought the rooms were very comfortable and clean. I think I was in the new part of the roadhouse. The food was good and I liked the little shop.
