“Great Place to Stay”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

The Canyon Lodge was not the first, nor the last lodge I stayed during my 3 weeks trip throughout Namibia. But is was the first lodge that was very striking! Beautiful place, great accommodation, excellent pool with a superb view and hidden in the magnificent landscape around the Fish River Canyon! Staff and food is very helpful and kind.
I will not write loads of reviews, only a limited will receive the privilege to get my nomination!

If you can handle the presence of dozens of (German) tourists, then this is a perfect place to enjoy the beautiful Southern Namibian landscape, the swimming pool with an excellent view, the nice buffet dinner and the convenient cottages. The staff at the lodge is very friendly. We did the self drive 4x4 tour which starts at the Canyon Lodge. This tour is very well signposted and we saw lots of blue wildebeast, oryx, springbok and ostriches.
We experienced one major disappointment. Approximately 6 months before our stay, we booked for 2 nights, and even paid for that in advance (as requested by Gondwana) one month before arrival. However, 2 weeks before arrival we were informed by email that we could only stay 1 night, allegedly due to a 'system error'. They offered us to stay at their other accomodation, the Road House, the second night. As we specifically wanted to stay at the Canyon Lodge since it is so spectacularly situated, we have chosen not to go to the Road House, but to cancel the 2nd night. Upon arrival at the Canyon Lodge, we were even more disappointed that we had to leave after one night because it is a beautiful place after all.

Thank you for writing a review about your stay. My sincere apologies for the discomfort you experienced and that you could only stay for one night. I am glad you enjoyed it so much and really hope we get to accommodate you somewhere in the future for a much longer stay.

This Lodge is about 20K from the Fish River Canyon and very quirky. The rooms are built around the huge boulders that litter the area which limits the space inside a little when half a rock is in the room but adds to the charm. Our room was furthest from the reception complex but well worth the walk as the view from the verandah was stunning. I loved the place.
The pool is also a walk from the accommodation but nothing to cause a problem.
The staff are friendly and helpful. We had a puncture whilst we were there and it was repaired for us very quickly. Punctures are a regular occurrence on the gravel roads around here.
Wifi is only available around the "wifi table" by the bar but it provided a good signal.
Being used to a non smoking culture in public places I did find it difficult having a smoking bar on top of the non smoking bar!
Food was buffet style and good although it could have been hotter.
I really enjoyed our stay here and it was well worth the difficult, boring 7 hour drive to get here just to see the Fish River Canyon which was awesome,
I would recommend this lodge.

Room Tip: We had a room furthest from the reception, restaurant etc. and it had a great view. Think it was 24

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay and for visiting us. I am sorry to hear about the car trouble you experienced but I am glad the staff jumped right in to help. My apologies for the buffet not being as warm as you expected it to be. . In Namibia, it takes a lot of driving to get from one place to another, but that is what makes our country so special – the long drive to see something spectacular. Thank you for recommending us and we hope you will visit again soon.

Kind Regards

Very comfortable lodging, food as always was great! Pool is a bit of a walk from lodges, but worth it! Gorgeous setting, just be sure to bring everything you will need for the kids with you the first time. We also did the evening walk which was a lovely setting to enjoy the view and a sundowner.

After 2004 my wife and I were there the second time. A great place with great people! Just so gorgeous and so picturesque! To stay there for a day, two or three is a must if visiting Southern Namibia! We definitely will come back.

While our chalet was small it was perfectly adequate for the one night that we spent there and we loved the way that they were fitted in to the landscape.

The staff could not have been more helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The big surprise was a loaf of gluten free bread baked especially for me. Not many places would go to that much trouble.

South Africans who have a Gondwana card get special rates which makes this a very affordable option.

What a lovely review to receive. Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay. I am very proud of our staff for making it so special and memorable. Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The harsh rocky desert region at the southern tip of Namibia has made many a traveller think that God has forgotten this land. Not so, just 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon, leading off the dusty D324, you’ll find the Canon Lodge, an oasis seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The Canon Lodge is one of two existing accommodation centres in the expanse of the 530 km² Gondwana Canon Park. Tall weather-beaten granite boulders mark the location of the lodge and forms an integral part of the overall design. The 20 thatch stone bungalows are dotted among the kopies and are beautifully designed, with the walls shaped around the hills so that boulders protrude into your room, cool to the touch and smoothly rounded by an eternity of erosion. ... more   less
