Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort

Although the staff is friendly and accommodating in some ways there is room for improvement. They were unable to provide basic recommendations such as a hiking route. The restaurant is so so and was unwilling to accommodate a vegetarian. We ended up leaving and going to Canyon Roadhouse.

This place has a wonderful setting in the end of the canyon. Most of the staff are very friendly, but the place is quite disorganised,, a few hours of training and reorganising the place would not go a miss. We struggled to book here and had to call/ email several times. We ended up in one of the family chalets, which was lovely, but the hot tub was broken and when we asked the staff about it no one came. The mineral pools are lovely and warm, but the place needs rennovating and despite there being staff constantly mopping in there the tiles are work and dirty. The food was lovely, but menu very limited. I would stay again but not expect too much from the place.

On our way from South Africa, this was our first stop in Namibia through the Onseepkans border post. It's quite a drive, so we went straight to the restaurant for some refreshments and lunch. We were given a menu but on ordering, none of what we wanted was available (not even juice, only carbonated drinks and selected beers). We could also only order sandwiches, no meat. When we asked our waitress, she informed us that they could only serve meat once a day - if they serve meat for lunch, there would not be enough meat for supper. It took ages to settle our drinks bill. Dumbstruck we went to our camping site and made our own lunch.

The hot springs (both indoor and outdoor) were amazing and just because of that (and the spa) we would have loved to stay longer, should the service be up to standard.

The ablution facilities were clean and spacious enough to get dressed in.

The camp site was a bit rowdy at night as the resort was quite full and no regulations to control campers seemed to be in place at night time.

Ai Ais should be a jewel in Namibia's crown, unfortunately it misses out in several ways. Booking was difficult. The staff would only deal with us via e mail and were not at all helpful. We eventually managed to get one night and had to take a family chalet when we only wanted a room. On arrival the reception had no idea which rooms were clean and ready. The chalet was spacious, and very excitingly had a hot tub - broken. We asked for someone to come, no-one turned up.
The restaurant cooked the best eland steak, but was really basic, 4 meats all with the same frozen veg, and the same sauce.
The pool for bathing in the hot springs is in a little disrepair, but it was lovely and warm. The setting is fantastic, but there are no trail maps for exploring, and little information about the canyon.

We expected so much but unfortunately was really dissapointed. It seems that there is currently a management problem? The ablution blocks and "kitchen area" was not clean as was expected from such a well known Resort. We did not brought any meat with us from SA and expected to find "braai packs" for sale in the shop. Unfortunately the freezers did stock any - only big blocks of ice?? The overall impression of the shop was dissapointing. The outside swimming pool was only filled with water 2 days before our arrival, whilst it was still warm?

We will not visit again - will rather spend time at neighbouring privately owned lodges.

The hot springs are a dirty hole in the ground. Not worth visiting. We drove an extra 120 km to visit it and were very disappointed. The staff at reception was quite unwilling to give any information.Rather spend your time in the Fish River canyon.

The second biggest Canyon in the world is worth the visit. Indoor and outdoor pools are great. Some are really hot and others cooler. The accommodation was neat, spotless and the staff friendly. The food was good and hadots of local flavour. We enjoyed our stay tremendously

Room Tip: We went for the mountain view, which was good value.
