Beautiful setting right on the western rim of the Canyon. Quite hectic roads getting there and make sure you have spare tyres! Staff very friendly and helpful, food very good. Rooms cleans and lovely. Would go back for the tranquility.

We stayed one night at the Fish River Lodge. The drive is very long from the canyon, an additional 240km of unpaved road (make sure you have a 4 by 4 or you will have trouble to access the lodge).

The lodge is wonderful and the view is simply breathtaking.

The staff are very friendly and most speak English, Afrikaans and the local languages. They were very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas.

The chalets are very spacious and set in a way so you have as well a lovely view of the canyon. The bedroom were very large and the bed very comfortable yet they have some issues with the insects infecting the chalets (mosquitos and criquets who can be a pain during the night), make sure you keep the door close at all time and you should be fine. Despite the distance from the first town, they manage to have a very interesting menu and the food was very good.

Room Tip: All the chalets have a magnificient view !

We spent 3 nights at the lodge overlooking the Fish river Canyon with spectacular views and walks from the lodge. For a high-end lodge they catered very well for our children and were willing to go the extra mile for meals for the children even though they have limited options being so far from a town. Their food was great, some dishes were a bit of a miss but overall the food was excellent.

The accommodation layout is very practical and well appointed, the only thing lacking were hooks to hang towels, but that was just a minor thing. The rooms were well taken care of and any issues we had were very quickly addressed by the friendly staff.

The swimming pool is beautifully situated at the main lodge, however it is not heated at all (even with solar heating) and being in the shade was very cold for the time of year we were there. It would benefit from a little solar heating to make it truly spectacular.

Room Tip: All the rooms have full view of the Canyon - any room is great.

We spent two nights at the lodge. The view is unsurpassed, right on the rim of the canyon, quite breathtaking. The room was great, view fantastic, comfortable and spacious. We enjoyed the service which was good without being over the top. Very friendly and helpful staff. We did the hike along the rim of the canyon and this was great too, beautiful views, well marked and laid out path and good walking. They offer a day drive down into the canyon which we did not do as we had driven a lot and 7 hours in a open car seemed a lot. However, it could be spectacular although expensive at N$1,000 per person. The last 20km of road to the lodge is rough but manageable if you take it easy. Food was good. Only other small caveat is that when the wind blows (which it apparently does often), the lodge is very exposed and it canbe rather noisy! Would recommend a stay here.

Fish River Lodge

We had decided to explore some lodges and this was my first visit to the Fish River Lodge. The drive is very long and from the Eastern rim (Hobas and Ai Ais) to the Fish River Lodge on the Western rim on the canyon, an additional 240km of unpaved road.

The lodge is beautiful and situated on the Western rim of the Fish River Canyon, sitting on the deck one can see for 20km plus, Kokerbome (Quiver trees) abound and on the guided drive to the Fish River we passed Springbok, Mountain Zebra, Klipspringer, Grouse and a variety of other bird life.

The staff are fantastic and most speak English, Afrikaans, German and two of the local languages. The manager, Wiley our guide and the rest of the staff were helpful and very knowledgeable of the area and the fauna and flora.

The chalets are attractive and also positioned on the rim of the canyon with a large bedroom facing the canyon, an enormous indoor and an outdoor shower and a lovely timber deck.
The lodge offers full board and the menu is interesting and the food tasty, there is actually too much food. There is free afternoon coffee and cake which one can enjoy on the pool deck while watching the shadows run across the canyon.

My only gripe is that the advertised free WIFI did not work once during our two day stay and although the PC logged on nothing worked, this was in contrast with Canyon Lodge that also uses VSAT internet and their system although slow allowed me to upload photographs without a problem.

Would I visit the lodge again, possibly in a “fly in” situation but the long drive killed the adventure for me.

Room Tip: Rooms 7 to 9 are my personal favourites but all the rooms have great views

Stayed for 2 nights in march. the last 20km are the worst but we made it in a small 2 wheel drive with normal road clearance. However if you are not a confident driver I would have a car with higher clearance. Anyway the lodge is amazing. The view and situation are awesome and the staff are excellent as is the food. The rooms are lovely, the wind gets up from the canyon in the afternoon and early part of the night and is noisy but didn't affect sleeping too much. The pool has an amazing view, really worth the effort to get there

We stayed here two nights. Each individual chalet sits directly at the canyon's edge. The view is spectacular! The lodge is on the opposite side of the canyon from the other lodges so you really are in paradise. The restaurant was very good, the service is excellent and there is also a pool. We took a day trip into the canyon which the lodge provided. Perfect!
